Danaé and John's wedding at Makoy Event Center was one of those days.
From the outside looking in, everything was elegant. The Makoy Event Center has a way of making every wedding feel polished without feeling overdone. The ceremony space is warm and inviting, the reception room transforms beautifully for the evening, and it gives couples plenty of room to celebrate with everyone they love.
But what I'll remember most about this wedding had nothing to do with decorations.
It was the love.
Not the flashy kind.
The steady kind.
The kind that stays.
The kind that chooses someone over and over again.
Throughout the day, it became clear that this wasn't just a celebration of finding each other. It was a celebration of everything they had already walked through together.
During the ceremony, Danaé spoke with so much gratitude toward John. She shared how he was there for her during a season when she had become comfortable with being alone. Sometimes life teaches us to build walls because it's easier than risking being hurt again. John quietly changed that. He showed her that real love doesn't force itself into someone's life. One of the most emotional moments of the day came as family members and loved ones shared recorded messages that were played throughout both the ceremony and reception. Then came a moment I'll never forget.
As the pastor asked the traditional question,
"Who gives this bride to be married?"
Instead of one voice answering...
Every bridesmaid answered together.

That single response said everything about the kind of community Danaé has built around herself.

Sure, I love creating timeless portraits.
I love beautiful venues.
I love golden sunsets.
But what keeps me coming back weekend after weekend are the stories.
I love learning how two people arrived at this exact moment.

Just Something to Remember
Yesterday my family and I spent the day at Kings Island.
Truthfully, during wedding season, days like that don't happen nearly as often as we'd like. Between photographing weddings, editing, meeting with couples, answering emails, and just running a business, weekends disappear pretty quickly.
So when we get a chance to just be a family, we take it.
Now... I say I put the cameras down, but if you know me, you know that's not entirely true.
I still take pictures.
Always have.
Not because I'm working, but because I genuinely don't want to forget these moments.
Life Doesn't Have to Be Perfect to Be Worth Remembering
One thing I've told people for years is this...
Take the "bad" picture.
Seriously.
Take the blurry one.
Take the one where everyone's sweaty from walking around all day.
Take the one where your kid is making the weird face.
Take the selfie.
Take the photo that isn't Instagram-worthy.
Who cares?
Twenty years from now, nobody is going to say, "Man... I wish this picture had better lighting."
They're going to say...
"I remember that day."
One Day, Someone Is Going to Ask
I think about this a lot now that I'm a dad.
One day my daughter is going to be grown.
Maybe she'll have kids of her own.
Maybe one day they'll sit down on the couch, pull an old photo album off the shelf, and ask,
"So... what was this day?"
I want her to have an answer.
I want her to remember the smell of the all of the fair and amusement park snacks
The heat.
The excitement of getting on another ride.
The way we laughed over absolutely nothing.
Those little details don't seem important today...
Until they're all you have left.
That's Why I Love Telling Stories
Pictures are incredible.
But context makes them priceless.
I've always been the type of person that writes little notes beside photos.
Who was there.
Why we were there.
What happened.
What everybody was laughing about.
Because years later, those details become just as valuable as the photograph itself.
Sometimes even more.
It's Also Why I Photograph Weddings the Way I Do
People hire photographers because they want beautiful images.
I get that.
I want beautiful images too.
But honestly...
That's never been the part that excites me the most.
I want your kids—or maybe even your grandkids someday—to flip through your wedding album and feel like they know you.
Not just what you looked like.
Who you were.
How your dad looked at you before he walked you down the aisle.
How your mom couldn't stop smiling.
The ridiculous joke your best man told that had everyone crying from laughter.
The little moments that nobody plans for.
Those are the moments that become family history.

Don’t wait for the perfect vacation.
Don’t wait until everyone loses ten pounds.
Don’t wait until the house is clean.

Every now and then, you photograph a wedding that reminds you what this whole profession is really about. Gary and Mary Lou's wedding at The Foundry in downtown Dayton was one of those days.
As I pulled into downtown, the Dayton Dragons were right in the middle of a home game. Fans were making their way into the stadium, people filled the sidewalks, and there was just an energy in the city that made it feel like the perfect summer afternoon. Right across the street from Day Air Ballpark, family and friends were gathering inside The Foundry, thinking they were about to celebrate an engagement party.
Little did they know, they were actually walking into a wedding.
I remember smiling when Gary and Mary Lou first shared this idea with me months before. They had known all along that this would be the day they would get married, but they wanted everyone else to experience the surprise in real time. It wasn't about pulling off some elaborate prank—it was about creating a moment their family and friends would never forget.
As more and more guests arrived, you could hear conversations between old friends picking up right where they had left off years ago. Family members embraced one another, coworkers from different chapters of life reconnected, and the room slowly filled with the kind of laughter that only happens when people genuinely enjoy being together. Before the ceremony even began, you could already tell this wasn't going to be just another wedding.

I've known Gary for nearly ten years now, and over that time he's become much more than someone I've worked with. He's been someone who's played a meaningful role in my own career journey. Their family has always treated me like a friend, so when they asked me to photograph one of the biggest days of their lives, it honestly meant a lot.
As the surprise unfolded, the reactions around the room were everything you could hope for. Smiles turned into tears. Laughter filled the room. Guests looked at one another in disbelief before realizing they were witnessing something incredibly special.
Listening throughout the evening was one of my favorite parts of the day. Everywhere I turned, someone was telling a story. Stories about growing up together, working together, raising families, overcoming life's challenges, and simply being there for one another. You quickly realized this wedding wasn't just celebrating two people finding love—it was celebrating a lifetime of friendships and relationships that helped lead them to this moment.
That's what I'll remember most about Gary and Mary Lou's wedding.

Finding the Right Wedding Photographer Means Finding Someone Who Can Adapt.
When you're searching for the right wedding photographer, you're looking for more than someone who takes beautiful photos. Our original plan was to spend the afternoon creating timeless portraits around the beautiful grounds of the Dayton Art Institute. The vision was classic, refined, and romantic. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had different plans. Rain settled in for the entire afternoon, and what should have been a straightforward engagement session quickly became six hours of watching forecasts, brainstorming ideas.
The truth is, this is one of my favorite parts about being a wedding photographer.
Anyone can photograph a wedding when everything goes according to plan. The real value comes when plans change and your photographer is able to confidently guide you toward a solution without adding stress to your day.
Thankfully, our friends at Studio in Dayton came through in a big way. They opened the doors to their incredible studio, giving us access to a beautiful space that provided my client with space, and simplicity.
The best part?
Shanika and Will never skipped a beat.
Instead of feeling disappointed, they trusted the process, embraced the change of plans, and showed up ready to create something special. That confidence allowed us to focus on what mattered most—capturing their connection instead of worrying about the weather outside.
Moments like these remind me why preparation is so important. Every wedding and engagement session comes with unexpected challenges. Whether it's rain, timeline changes, lighting conditions, or venue adjustments, our job is to stay calm, think ahead, and provide solutions before our couples ever feel the weight of the problem.

There are weddings that are beautiful... and then there are weddings that make you forget what year you're living in.
This past weekend we had the opportunity to photograph Shawn and Marty's wedding at The Brightside Event Center here in Dayton, and I don't know if I've ever walked away from a wedding feeling like we had just stepped out of a different decade.
If you know me, you know I absolutely love The Brightside. It's one of those venues that can become whatever a couple dreams it to be. One weekend it feels modern and industrial. The next it feels elegant and upscale. This weekend? It felt like someone dropped us right into the 1940s.
The vision was Old Hollywood.
Romantic.
Classic.
Timeless.
And somehow, Shawn and Marty made it all come together without it ever feeling overdone.
I remember talking with Shawn back in 2025 when she first reached out about photographing their wedding. We spent some time talking about what she envisioned, and I remember sitting there thinking, "Man... if they can pull this off, this is going to be something special."
Fast forward to wedding day...
Every little detail had purpose. The rich blues woven throughout the day. The vintage-inspired decor. The way everyone dressed. Even the atmosphere felt slower in the best possible way. It didn't feel like everyone was trying to rush to the next thing. People were present. They laughed, they danced, they celebrated, and they soaked in every minute together.
As photographers, we get to see a lot of weddings. Every couple is different, but every once in a while there's a wedding where you stop shooting for just a second, look around, and think...
"This is really cool."
That happened more than once throughout the day.
One thing I've been noticing more and more going into 2026 is that couples seem to be shifting away from chasing whatever happens to be trending online. Instead, they're leaning into weddings that actually feel like them.
They're choosing timeless over trendy.
Romantic over flashy.
Classic over complicated.
And honestly... I hope that trend sticks around for a long time.
Because trends come and go.
Good stories don't.
When I got home to start editing their gallery, I knew I couldn't edit these images the way I normally would. This wedding deserved something different. I found myself adding subtle sepia tones into the black-and-white images instead of leaving them pure monochrome. The color edits became softer with muted ash tones, letting those rich blues quietly stand out without stealing the attention.
The gallery almost feels like you're flipping through a box of family photographs that have been passed down for generations.
That's exactly how it should feel.
Toward the end of the night, after most of the formalities were over and everyone was simply enjoying being together, I found Shawn for just a minute.
I looked at her and said,
"Your vision has truly come to life."
She smiled because I think she knew exactly what I meant.
For one day, we all got to step into another era.
For one day, it felt like time slowed down.
For one day, it felt like we got to experience a little bit of Old Hollywood right here in Dayton, Ohio.

Marah and Billy, thank you guys for letting me spend part of your Ohio vacation with your family. It was so good catching up, hearing your story, and seeing just how much life has changed over the years.
One thing that really hit me after this session was realizing that Marah and I actually did our very first photoshoot together at Oaks Quarry Park about six years ago. Back then, neither of us could've imagined what life would look like today. Now she's standing there with Billy, three beautiful little girls, and a family that's built on so much love.
It's honestly pretty incredible to see how life comes full circle.
I hope years from now these photos remind you of more than just what everyone looked like. I hope they remind you of this season of life—the laughter, the little hands reaching for Mom and Dad, the girls making each other laugh, and the simple joy of being together.
Sometimes the biggest blessings begin with one decision. For Marah, that decision was moving to Florida, and just twelve days later, meeting the man who would become her husband. This wedding felt like me being right at home with my folks
Today, I had the honor of photographing the wedding of Terrence and Tenesia at one of Fairborn's charming intimate wedding venue (The Main House Events) located on West Main Street. From the moment guests began arriving, it was clear this day was going to be about more than just two people saying "I do." It was a celebration of family, friendship, brotherhood, sisterhood, and the countless relationships that helped shape this couple's journey together.
The ceremony itself was intimate and heartfelt. Surrounded by the people who matter most, Terrence and Tenesia exchanged vows in a setting that perfectly complemented their love story. The venue offered an inviting atmosphere that created a sense of closeness between every guest in attendance, making each moment feel personal and meaningful.
What made this wedding especially memorable for me was the relationship I share with the groom. Terrence and I go back much further than photography. Having known him since our high school years, documenting this chapter of his life carried a different level of significance. It's always an incredible honor when couples trust me to preserve their wedding day memories, but when those couples are people I've known outside of business, it becomes even more meaningful.
Throughout the day, there was a constant sense of warmth in the room. Devin + Leraé - a Story of Love at The Oregon Haus
Some weddings feel loud. Others feel effortless. Devin and Leraé’s wedding day felt intentional from beginning to end — rich emerald details, emotional moments, historic architecture, and a celebration that felt less like a production and more like two people fully present with the people they love most.
From the very beginning, this wedding was filled with incredible energy, genuine love, and a room full of people who understood exactly what this day represented.
Their ceremony was built on thoughtful vows, powerful foundations, and the kind of connection you immediately recognize when you see it.
Their wedding took place at The Oregon Haus — an elegant and spacious venue featuring multiple bedrooms, beautiful getting ready spaces, and an incredible ballroom area that created the perfect atmosphere for both their ceremony and reception. Every corner of this venue carries character, making it the ideal setting for an intimate yet sophisticated black tie celebration.
But what stood out most wasn't the venue, the details, or even the incredible emerald color palette.
It was them.
Their marriage feels patient.

And maybe more than anything else, there is a clear appreciation for one another’s complete existence — something that shows up in every interaction, every glance, and every moment they shared throughout the day.

Megan + Dustin Engagement near Lebanon Library
Sometimes the best sessions are the ones that are just… simple.
When Megan started talking to me about what she wanted for their engagement session, the vision was pretty straightforward. Nothing crazy. Nothing super over-produced. She wanted something small, hometown feeling, natural, fun, a little corky, and something that actually felt like them.
Honestly? Those are usually the sessions that end up being the most fun.
We started hanging out around the downtown area near the Lebanon Public Library because Lebanon just has that vibe. Small town charm, cool little corners everywhere, and enough character that you don’t have to force anything.
And that was kind of the whole goal.
No trying too hard.
No pretending to be something you're not.
Just two people hanging out, laughing, being weird together, and enjoying the process.
Because at the end of the day, that’s what this whole thing should be about.
After spending some time downtown, we made the quick drive out toward Flat Rock Falls to switch things up a little. Waterfalls, walking trails, a little adventure, and honestly just more opportunities for these two to do what they do best: have fun together.
One of my favorite things about this session was that nothing really felt forced.
It felt like a small hometown couple just enjoying life.
It felt ordinary.
And I mean that in the absolute best way possible.
Not every session needs to feel like a movie production.
Sometimes you just need good people, good vibes, and an excuse to spend time together while somebody follows you around with a camera.
Megan + Dustin, congratulations again. Seriously, thank you for trusting me with this season of life because this session was a blast.
We are going to have SUCH a good time cooking on wedding day and I genuinely cannot wait to celebrate with you both.

There are some weddings where you leave feeling like you just documented a day.
And then there are weddings like Whitney + Jarrett’s — the kind that remind you why people fall in love with weddings in the first place.
Set against the rolling hills of Ivory Meadows, their wedding day carried this calm, effortless energy from beginning to end. Even with the rain moving in throughout the day, nothing ever felt heavy. If anything, it made the entire atmosphere feel more intimate. Cozy. Intentional. The soft skies, the deep navy tones, the reflections on the pavement, the way everyone leaned into the moment instead of fighting the weather — it honestly felt perfect for them.
Whitney + Jarrett have one of those relationships you can feel immediately when you’re around them. There was no pressure to perform. No forced moments. Just two people genuinely enjoying each other and soaking in every second with the people they love most.
That showed up everywhere throughout the day.
It showed up in the laughs during portraits.
In the way they held onto each other during quiet moments.
In the way the bridal party hyped them up nonstop.
In the emotional moments during the ceremony.
In the way the guests filled the dance floor and celebrated like they truly cared about these two.
And honestly, that’s what made this wedding feel so special.
It wasn’t just beautiful — though it absolutely was. Every detail was put together so well, from the classy navy styling to the way the venue blended into the landscape. The vendors came together and absolutely worked magic all day long. But beyond all of that, this wedding felt alive. Real. The kind of wedding that makes you pause for a second and appreciate good people and genuine love.
One of my favorite parts of the day was watching Whitney + Jarrett fully embrace everything as it came. It was a day FULL of Rain! Whatever. Timeline shifts? No Let’s do it. They stayed locked into what actually mattered: being present with each other. We did get a brief moment in the storm to get some bride + groom shots in the open field. It was a moment- a step to soak it all in. To simply be. Ah
And because of that, the photos feel honest.
The wide-open field portraits under the gray sky felt cinematic and timeless. The rain reflections around the ceremony space added so much mood and texture. The sparkler exit brought this electric energy to end the night. Every part of the day carried its own personality, but somehow it all still felt cohesive — relaxed, stylish, emotional, and fun all at once.
At the end of the day, weddings like this are a reminder that marriage isn’t really about perfection. It’s about connection. About finding somebody you can laugh with when things don’t go according to plan. Somebody you can look across the room at after years together and still feel proud of what you’ve built side by side.
So to the couples planning weddings right now, to the newly married couples, and even to the people who have been married for decades — continue enjoying love. Continue choosing each other. Continue appreciating the process of growing together.

Not in a competitive way, but in a learning way. We all do it. We observe, we assess, we compare, and sometimes… we question ourselves.
