Push vs Pull: The Kind of Marketing That Actually Builds Trust

Lately, inspiration has been finding me in unexpected places. Isn’t really too odd, I am always listening for new ways to be inspired.

This time, it came while listening to another creative’s perspective — Alex and Britt Hall of @Chasingsunsetsllc. I’ve followed their work for a while now, and like most creatives, I pay attention. Not in a competitive way, but in a learning way. We all do it. We observe, we assess, we compare, and sometimes… we question ourselves.

That’s where imposter syndrome tends to creep in.

In one of their recent posts, they talked about something that immediately resonated with me: Push vs Pull marketing — and why one approach has worked far better for them than the other.

The Push Approach

We’ve all seen it.

“Book now.”
“Limited availability.”
“Don’t wait or you’ll miss out.”
“Inquire today.”

And to be clear — push marketing works when someone is already ready to book. When the decision is made and all they need is the right button on your website, that urgency helps move things along. At least this is where I see it working most.

But what about before that moment?

The Pull Approach (Or What I Call: Prove First)

What Alex and Britt articulated so well — and what I realized I’ve been doing for years — is the power of pull marketing.

Instead of telling people what to do, you show them who you are.

You provide value before the consultation.
You answer questions before they’re even ready to ask them.
You build trust before money is ever discussed.

I like to think of it this way:

You, the reader, may one day be my client — or you may never book me at all.
And that’s okay.

Maybe I photograph your wedding someday.
Maybe I help you find the right photographer for your budget and vision.
Maybe you save my name and pass it to a friend or family member later on.

Either way, our paths will likely cross — personally or professionally.

And just because you’re not allocating resources for my services right now, doesn’t mean I can’t help you right now.

Why I Write the Blogs I Write

This is exactly why I spend time writing blogs meant to serve, not sell.

Blogs like:

I write these because I’m paying attention.

I see what happens at real weddings.
I see the social media posts.
I see the Facebook groups explode when a bride posts “ISO wedding photographer.”

Sometimes the comments pile up so fast the post gets deleted within minutes. Sometimes it gets reposted anonymously just to avoid inbox overload, bots, scammers, random calls — the whole nine.

And when those same brides eventually land on my page, or hop on a quick phone call with me during a lunch break or after work, I hear the same thing over and over again:

“This conversation was a breath of fresh air.”
“Thank you for your honesty.”
“I feel confident after talking with you.”

That tells me something.

Not about my photography — but about my approach.

There’s Room for All of Us

Here’s the truth that doesn’t get said enough:

There are so many great creatives in this market.
Different price points.
Different styles.
Different experience levels.

Chances are, I’ve worked with many of them — or recommended them — at some point.

And that brings me back to another idea Alex and Britt shared: chasing the moments and celebrating the love.

I do this quietly all the time.

When I see another creative win, I send a message.
“No hate. No competition. Just respect.”

“I see you — you killed that.”
“YESSSIRRR.”
“Keep going.”

Like a coach congratulating an athlete after a great performance.

Sometimes the post is doing numbers.
Sometimes it isn’t.
But growth doesn’t always show up in likes — and creatives feel that.

What I’m Chasing in 2026

More transparency.
More encouragement.
More value-first marketing.
More pulling people in through trust — not pressure.

That’s the energy I’m carrying into 2026.

And if our paths cross because of it — I’m grateful for that, too.

Timeless, Elegant Wedding Photography for Cincinnati Brides Who Love Old-Money Vibes

Cincinnati has a way of whispering luxury rather than shouting it. The architecture, the history, the quiet grandeur tucked into its staircases, murals, and cityscapes—it’s the perfect backdrop for couples who want their love story documented with refinement, romance, and longevity in mind.

If you’re a Cincinnati bride searching for a wedding photographer who creates imagery that feels classic now and still breathtaking 50 years from now, you’re in the right place.

Why Cincinnati Is Perfect for Timeless Wedding Photography

From sweeping staircases and historic interiors to dramatic murals and skyline views, Cincinnati offers a rare blend of Midwestern charm and East Coast elegance. Think:

  • Architectural details that feel straight out of a vintage film

  • Urban backdrops with depth, texture, and story

  • Locations that elevate formal attire and refined styling

These settings naturally lend themselves to what many couples describe as “Old Money Vibes”—imagery that feels luxurious, editorial, and effortlessly sophisticated.

Black and white moments on grand staircases. Soft, romantic lighting during a quiet kiss. Intimate frames that feel cinematic rather than trendy. This is the kind of photography that doesn’t chase trends—it outlives them.

Bringing “Old Money Vibes” to Your Wedding & Engagement Photos

“Old Money” isn’t about being flashy—it’s about restraint, intention, and confidence. It’s tailored suits, timeless gowns, strong composition, and emotion over excess.

When photographing Cincinnati weddings and engagement sessions, we intentionally:

  • Use classic posing that highlights connection and chemistry

  • Focus on clean compositions and elegant framing

  • Let architecture and environment enhance—not overpower—the moment

  • Incorporate black & white imagery for a truly timeless finish

The result? Photos that feel elevated, romantic, and deeply personal.

February: The Secret Best Time for Engagement Photos in Cincinnati & Dayton

Here’s something most couples don’t realize: February is one of the best months for engagement sessions in Cincinnati and Dayton—especially if you love an urban, editorial aesthetic.

Why February works beautifully:

  • Fewer crowds in downtown Cincinnati & Dayton

  • Moody winter light that feels cinematic and romantic

  • Urban locations shine without heavy greenery distracting from architecture

  • Perfect for chic coats, sleek dresses, and polished styling

Historic buildings, city murals, elevators, staircases, and downtown streets create an effortlessly editorial look this time of year. If you’re dreaming of engagement photos that feel modern yet timeless, February is a hidden gem.

Serving Cincinnati & Dayton Brides Who Value Timeless Elegance

If you’re planning a wedding in Cincinnati (or Dayton) and envision photos that feel:

  • Classic, not trendy

  • Elegant, not staged

  • Emotional, not overproduced

Then a timeless, old-money inspired photography approach may be exactly what you’re looking for.

Your love story deserves imagery that feels just as meaningful decades from now as it does today.

The Huffman Black has done it again.

Another stunning experience—this time with the Cake & Sip event hosted by The Huffman Black and associates. It was the perfect way to kick off the new year, leaning gently into the season of love—whether that love was romantic, self-focused, or simply rooted in appreciation.

This was a private, premier-access experience, thoughtfully curated from start to finish. Guests had the opportunity to decorate their own cakes, beautifully prepared by Rojo’s Cakes, while sipping on hand-poured cocktails crafted specifically to complement the evening. It was intentional, elevated, and refreshingly intimate.

More than anything, this event created space.

Space to relax.
Space to unwind.
Space to share meaningful moments with good people.

As adults, those moments don’t come around as often as they should. Whether you were there to treat yourself, celebrate friendship, speak your partner’s love language, or simply enjoy being pampered for the night—this experience delivered exactly that.

And that’s truly what The Huffman Black does best.

They don’t just host events—they curate unforgettable experiences, placing you in rooms filled with people who inspire, connect, and ultimately make an impact on your life in more ways than one.

And they’re just getting started.

The first quarter of 2026 is already stacked with thoughtfully designed experiences, starting with their next major event:

Exclusive Content Day — February 21, 2026

This experience will feature three distinct creative concepts:

  • A Black Cherry Wedding

  • Girls Night & Pink, Cut-E

  • Lastly, A Night Cap

You can preview each concept here:
👉The Huffman Black Content Day

This is a $275 investment, and the value speaks for itself:

  • Access to a uniquely designed, luxury event space

  • A handcrafted, 1-of-1 styled session

2026 Wedding Trends From Real-World Experience

A Photographer’s Perspective for the Planning Bride

If you’re reading this, chances are you’re deep in the planning process. Or at least near it , hopefully!

You’ve locked in a few vendors.
Your Pinterest boards are overflowing.
Your vision already exists — now you’re refining the details that make the day feel intentional, personal, and unforgettable.

This isn’t about starting over.
This is about elevating what you already know you want.

After photographing weddings across Dayton, Columbus, Cincinnati, and beyond, here are 2026 wedding trends I’m seeing consistently — and loving — from behind the camera.

These aren’t trends for the sake of trends.
They’re thoughtful design choices that add depth, conversation, and authenticity to your day.

Food as Decor: When the Table Becomes the Experience

One of the most impactful shifts in 2026 weddings is food serving as intentional décor.

Think:

  • Fresh bread displays as table centerpieces

  • Family-style charcuterie boards styled with florals and greenery

  • Seasonal fruits, herbs, and edible textures integrated directly into table design

Not only does this approach photograph beautifully, but it serves a dual purpose:

  • Guests naturally gather at their tables

  • Curiosity sparks conversation

  • The experience feels communal instead of staged

    • It also allows for a photographer to capture some moments while guest are eating vs a full dinner (moments where photographers tend not to shoot to avoid catching guest mid large chew.

From a photography standpoint, food-as-decor adds texture, movement, and storytelling — which translates into images that feel alive rather than static.

Scenic Photo Opportunities Over Makeshift Backdrops

In 2026, couples are moving away from temporary backdrops and leaning into natural, immersive environments.

Instead of a step-and-repeat or rented wall, couples are choosing:

  • Natural greenery walls

  • Stone, ivy, or wood elements tied to the venue

  • Floral installations that feel grown, not built

Imagine a summer wedding in Dayton, Ohio:
A warm afternoon light, a lush natural wall with organic florals, subtle draping, and soft textures — elegant, timeless, and grounded in the environment.

These moments photograph effortlessly because they don’t feel forced.
They feel real.

As a photographer, these are the spaces where couples relax, guests linger, and genuine emotion shows up.

Personalized Entertainment That Feels Like You

We’re living in an era where creativity is everywhere — and couples are embracing that.

In 2026, entertainment isn’t just about hiring a DJ or band (though those still matter). It’s about layering the experience.

I’m seeing:

  • Friends or family performing live music during cocktail hour

  • Spoken-word artists sharing a custom piece

  • Specialty musicians adding unexpected moments throughout the day

This adds emotional depth and creates moments that feel unrepeatable — and those are always the moments couples treasure most when they look back at their photos.

Custom Linens as Functional Keepsakes

Custom linens are becoming one of the most underrated guest details.

Whether it’s:

  • Napkins embroidered with initials or a wedding date

  • Coordinated fabric textures tied to your color palette

  • Table accents that guests can take home

These pieces serve double duty:

  • They elevate your design visually

  • They become a keepsake guests actually keep

From a visual standpoint, custom linens add softness, cohesion, and intention — details that matter when your gallery tells the full story of your day.

Rewriting Traditions to Fit Your Love Story

One of the strongest themes in 2026 weddings is intentional tradition.

Not abandoning tradition — but choosing it on purpose.

Couples are asking:

  • Does this reflect us?

  • Does this add meaning?

  • Or are we doing it because it’s expected?

Whether it’s:

  • Reimagining ceremony structure

  • Adjusting timelines for better flow

  • Creating new rituals that feel personal

Your wedding doesn’t need to look like anyone else’s — it needs to feel like yours.

And when that alignment exists, it shows in every photograph.

Guest Books That Create Memories, Not Dust

Traditional guest books are becoming less common — but memory-driven alternatives are thriving.

One standout trend:
Polaroid guest books

Guests snap photos, leave notes, and contribute real-time memories that couples can revisit long after the day ends.

These stations are:

  • Interactive

  • Emotional

  • Full of personality

And from a photographer’s perspective, they create candid moments that add richness to your gallery.

Final Thoughts for the Bride Mid-Planning

If you’re in that in-between phase — where vendors are booked and vision is forming — this is the moment to refine, not rush.

The best weddings I photograph aren’t the most expensive or elaborate.
They’re the ones where every choice feels intentional.

If you’re planning a wedding in Dayton, Ohio or the surrounding areas and want photography that captures:

  • Emotion over perfection

  • Experience over performance

  • Story over trends

I’d love to be part of your day.

Planning a Wedding in 2026: Why Vetted Professionals Matter More Than Ever

If you’ve recently gotten engaged—first of all, congratulations ! This season of life is exciting, emotional, and full of big decisions. But it can also feel overwhelming when you realize just how many vendors you’re suddenly expected to choose: photographers, planners, florists, venues, DJs, videographers, and more.

As a wedding professional heading into 2026, I call it my duty to be transparent with you.

I spend time every day reaching out to venues, planners, photographers, stylists, DJs, and other wedding pros—not just to build relationships, but to understand the realities of how weddings are executed and how vendors operate ( We literally have group chats and we talk through direct messenger regularly) I want you working with people who are trustworthy, accountable, and committed to your experience, not just to posting pretty photos online.

A Hard Truth From 2025: Ohio Brides Were Impacted by Vendor Issues

Screen capture of 2025 News clipping that was widespread in 2025 | Ohio Wedding Industry

In 2025, the Ohio wedding world saw several couples being hurt by vendors who didn’t deliver as expected—including reported cases of photographers and planners who never showed up, ghosted couples after payment, or left couples struggling to get refunds.

Here are a few verified examples:

  • Multiple brides reported that a local photographer ghosted them after payment and failed to deliver photos or refunds, leaving couples stressed and without the memories they paid for. Facebook

  • Several Ohio brides had wedding deposit issues with a venue planner, and had difficulty getting their money back when legal history and other complications surfaced. 10TV

  • Social groups and community posts shared warnings from couples and vendors about planners or photographers who were allegedly engaging in unethical practices, prompting other couples to be cautious. Facebook+1

(While not every situation resulted in a traditional “news article,” these community reports and local investigative stories were widely shared among Ohio wedding groups in 2025.)

These situations are heartbreaking—not because weddings didn’t happen, but because couples were put in gut-wrenching scenarios during a time that should have been joyful.

Why “Vetted” Matters More Than Nice Photos

In simple terms: Anyone can screenshot images from other photographers and claim them as their own on an Instagram.
Heck, its probably another photographer stealing my photos somewhere and claiming them to be their own without my permission. If it never comes to my attention, I wont be able to combat it.

There are countless talented, honest professionals in the Ohio wedding industry who genuinely want to support couples and make wedding days unforgettable. You can also find them at almost every price point too!

But popularity or a pretty portfolio alone doesn’t guarantee professionalism or the righteous experience.

A vetted vendor is someone who:

  • Communicates clearly and proactively

  • Offers transparent contracts with defined deliverables

  • Has verifiable reviews and testimonials

  • Will schedule a chat—whether by phone, FaceTime, or in person

  • Responds professionally, even under tough questions

No one is perfect, and I’m the first to tell you that I’ve made plenty of mistakes as a wedding photographer, but as a result, I’ve developed back ups to my backups to my backups in order to prevent those mistakes from repeating themselves .

If a vendor pushes you to book without a conversation or seems evasive about contract details, that’s a red flag.

My Commitment to You as a 2026 Bride

I don’t believe in fear-based booking. I believe in informed booking. In my intake form: I ask frankly “ What are your biggest fears in wedding photography, this is to talk through pain points early, instill confidence so we can work through what works and what does not work for you as a client.

Your wedding deserves professionals who value:
- Your peace of mind
- Your memories
- Your trust
- Honest communication

Great weddings aren’t just about the final photos or event day—they’re about the trust you build with the people you choose to surround yourselves with.

So I encourage every couple to:

  • Schedule a call or FaceTime with vendors

  • Ask hard questions about process and contingency plans

  • Read contracts carefully and ask for clarifications

  • Book professionals who are transparent, respectful, and communicative

You deserve to feel confident—not pressured.

Final Advice for Newly Engaged Couples

Before you book:

  • Sit down and discuss your priorities

  • Meet your vendors (by phone or video or in person if applicable )

  • Trust professionals who take time to listen and explain

  • Choose people who value your experience as much as their own portfolio

Weddings are once-in-a-lifetime moments. Your vendors should add joy to that journey—not stress.

If you ever have questions about vendors, contracts, rates, or anything wedding-related, I’m here to help. I’m here to help if you booked with me, I’m here for you if you book with someone else. I’m here to help you plan the most memorable event possible!

Because the right professionals don’t just show up—they stand with you.

Just Got Engaged? Feeling Excited… and a Little Overwhelmed?

First things first — congratulations, love is a wonderful thing!
If you’re newly engaged and wondering “Where do we even start?” — you’re not alone.

Most couples feel overwhelmed at this stage. There are venues, photographers, planners, florists, DJs, caterers… and everyone seems to be telling you something different. My goal here is to simplify the process and help you understand who to book first, when to book them, and which Dayton-area vendors I personally recommend based on real, positive working relationships.

These recommendations aren’t random. They’re vendors I’ve worked alongside, trust professionally, and know show up for couples on wedding day.

I’m entering year 14 in the wedding industry! Let’s walk through it together 👇

18–24 Months Out ( Pre Planning, Researching Vendors - Discover your budget)

Start With: Venue + Date

Your venue determines almost everything else — your date, guest count, budget range, and which vendors are available.

Why this matters:
Popular Dayton venues book 12–18 months out, especially for May–November weekends.

In some situations, booking weddings on Fridays and Sundays can save you a bit of coin as well! Food for Thought

The Reverie

12–18 Months Out ( Major Vendors Get Booked)

Book Early: Planner + Photographer + Videographer

This is where stress levels drop significantly. These vendors will spend close to 10 hours with you on your special day, the right one will make your day seem seamless.

Wedding Planner

A planner helps guide vendor decisions, timelines, and budgets — especially helpful if you’re busy or planning from out of town.

Planner Recommendations

Photographer + Videographer

Your photographer + Videographer team is with you (typically) more than any other vendor on wedding day — this relationship matters.

Why book early:
Most experienced photographers only take a limited number of weddings per year. ( For me that number is approx 30-35.

Photography Recommendations

Florals + Entertainment (DJ / Band)

These vendors shape the feel of your wedding.

Florists

The Flower Shoppe

  • Customer centered, beautiful arrangements

DJ / Entertainment

Your DJ controls pacing, energy, and flow.

DJ Recommendations

  • Dj Dorse
Professional MCs, great crowd awareness, “The Party Instigator”

Dj BreakDown
Solid, experienced, and dependable, well traveled
https://iambreakdown.com/

8–10 Months Out (Vendor selection may be limited, but there’s still some solid vendors out there )

Catering + Cake / Desserts

If your venue doesn’t include catering, this becomes a priority.

These vendors can happen a bit closer, because some of these services may be finished and finalized prior to or vendors can take on multiple projects a day.

Catering Recommendations

Cake & Dessert

6–8 Months Out ( This Is Where We Have To Get Serious)

Not only for you and your sanity at times, but if you have a guest list, you’ll also want to make sure that they have well enough room to reschedule work, other obligations, babysitters, and if you’re inviting other photographers like myself, I would like to know if I have my homies wedding to attend before booking another wedding :)

Skincare + Hair + Makeup, Rentals, Invitations

Book beauty services early — especially if you have a large bridal party (I would even recommend an earlier booking if you have a larger bridal party, this can turn to be a half or full day event for these vendors. Each vendor will have very different booking processes, it is recommended that you consult each professional for their process.

Skincare Professionals

Ciera Co. Beauty

Hair Salons

This is also the time to finalize:

  • Rental needs (chairs, linens, specialty tables)

Most of these services are often offered by your venue, but local party supply companies and Amazon are quick and effective resources for these items.

-Also, don’t forget Facebook Marketplace, if you have the time to wait for those who recently had a wedding ceremony, there are often great finds in nearly perfect condition because they are recently married.

  • Save-the-dates and invitations ( ps. All of your engagement sessions are complementary with Sheldon James Photography

  • Ceremony details ( even if its just a rough outline so you can start imagining the order of events) Your planner and Photographer and DJ can get this squared away for you as well so no worries here! Use the resources, we’d love to help !

3–4 Months Out

Final Planning Phase

  • Confirm timelines with vendors and review contracts

if you have a wedding planner, this would be a good time to ask for them to take the lead on this with your suggestions.

  • Create seating chart

  • Apply for Ohio marriage license

  • Final dress fittings- This is key here, just because you want everything to be just right, and the closer you get to your wedding date, so does other brides, and seamstress get busy during that time of the year and often are a small team organization.

At this point, everything should feel organized, not rushed.

Wedding Week

Enjoy the Moment

Your vendors should be handling logistics — your only job is to be present, celebrate, and soak it all in. We SERIOUSLY mean that. Don’s Sweat the small stuff, an out of place floral arrangement, 3 minutes off schedule, somebody running a few minutes late, the bride needing a few moment before walking down the aisle even though the wedding begins at 5:30 sharp! We wait on the bride and Groom. This is YOUR DAY. Not Ours.

🤍 A Final Note From Me

This timeline is built from Real Weddings that I’ve had the honor and privilege being apart of, not Pinterest theory. Every vendor listed here is someone I’ve worked alongside, communicated with professionally, and seen show up for couples when it matters most.

If you ever need help narrowing options, understanding priorities, or figuring out what actually matters for your wedding day — I’m always happy to help guide you.

What’s New for Sheldon James Photography in 2026?

Every year brings growth, but 2026 feels different — more intentional, more refined, and more aligned with how I want couples and clients to experience photography.

Sheldon James Photography has always been about more than just images. It’s about trust, preparation, storytelling, and showing up ready for whatever the day brings. As we move into 2026, I’m doubling down on those values while refining how I serve my clients from the first inquiry to final delivery.

Here’s what’s new — and what that means for you.

A More Refined, Stress-Free Client Experience

One of the biggest focuses heading into 2026 is making the photography experience easier and more predictable for my clients.

That means:

  • Clear communication from the start

  • Honest conversations about timelines, lighting, and expectations

  • Less guesswork on the wedding day

  • More confidence walking into your event knowing you’re covered

Photography should never feel chaotic. My role is to anticipate moments, adapt to environments, and keep things moving smoothly — even when plans shift.

Storytelling Over Trends — Always

Trends come and go. Real moments last.

In 2026, my approach continues to lean heavily into story-driven imagery rather than overly staged or trend-heavy shots. That means focusing on:

  • Genuine emotion

  • Natural movement

  • Real interactions

  • Clean, timeless edits

I believe your photos should feel just as meaningful 10 years from now as they do the week you receive them.

Moments That You Cherish

A Realistic Approach to Venues & Lighting

Not every venue is bright, white, or flooded with natural light — and that’s okay.

In 2026, I’m continuing to be upfront about how different environments impact photography. Historic buildings, museums, darker reception spaces, and evening ceremonies all come with unique challenges. Rather than overpromising, I focus on adapting professionally:

  • Using lighting intentionally (not aggressively)

  • Preserving atmosphere

  • Embracing mood where it fits the space

  • Prioritizing clean skin tones and balance

This transparency helps ensure everyone is aligned before the big day.

Deeper Local Experience in Dayton & Southwest Ohio

Serving Dayton, Kettering, and Southwest Ohio isn’t just about location — it’s about familiarity.

Knowing venues, timelines, lighting quirks, vendor flow, weather patterns, and parking logistics makes a difference. In 2026, that local experience continues to shape how I plan, shoot, and support my clients throughout their day.

Local knowledge = smoother days and stronger images.
There are not many venues in the southern Ohio Area that I’ve not had an experience with, or an similar experience with. I’ll be prepared walking into your special day.

Elevated Editing & Delivery Standards

Behind every delivered gallery is a lot of unseen work.

For 2026, my editing workflow remains focused on:

  • Consistent color

  • True-to-life skin tones

    • With some pops of moody twist upon request

  • Clean contrast

  • Thoughtful image selection

  • Secure backups and reliable delivery timelines

Every image that makes it into your gallery earns its place.

Looking Ahead

2026 isn’t about reinventing what works — it’s about sharpening it.

My commitment is simple:

  • Show up prepared

  • Tell honest stories

  • Deliver work that lasts

  • Create an experience clients feel confident recommending

If you’re planning a wedding, event, or milestone and value authenticity, preparation, and storytelling, I’d love to connect.

An Evening at The Huffman Black

A Private Table. A Shared Language. A 1 of 1 Experience.

There are certain spaces that let you know—immediately—that you’ve stepped into something different.

The Huffman Black is one of them.

You approach an all-black, three-story grand house tucked into the heart of the Huffman Historic District. It’s quiet in that way that feels intentional. No signs screaming for attention. No chaos. Just presence.

Once you press through the entry doors, it clicks:
You’re not walking into a typical event.
You’re stepping into a room curated for leaders, creatives, and tastemakers from across Ohio.

This isn’t dinner.
This is dining with purpose.

Where Culinary Art Meets Community

This private chef experience was presented by FEI@fei_dayton—alongside a collective of local culinary talent who came together to create something truly rare: a one-of-one dining experience.

From the first course, it was clear—this wasn’t food meant to simply be eaten.
It was food meant to be understood.

Plates arrived visually striking, layered with intentional textures, thoughtful notes, and flavor profiles that don’t show up on everyday menus. And trust me—I eat well. Often.

Still, this experience had me thinking differently.

Different ingredients.
Different techniques.
Different approaches to how flavor can tell a story.

By the end of the night, I was already mentally updating my pantry and rethinking how I cook at home. That’s when you know it’s special—when a meal doesn’t end at the table.

The Chefs Behind the Experience

The evening featured two chefs local to Dayton, Ohio:
Chef Brendon Miller and Chef Zackary Weiner—formerly of Jollity in Dayton’s Fire Blocks District.

For those who know, Jollity was a local favorite. Instead of maintaining a traditional brick-and-mortar model, the chefs chose to shut it down to pursue something more intentional: a rotating, invitation-driven dining concept built around exclusivity, storytelling, and connection.

If you’re wondering what to call that model, it lives somewhere between a Chef’s Table, Supper Club, and Pop-Up Tasting Experience—but even those labels feel too small for what this is becoming.

This is curated dining for people who value the experience as much as the meal.

Seven Courses. One Flow.

The night unfolded through a seven-course tasting menu, each dish intentionally designed to lead into the next.

What set this apart wasn’t just the food—it was the presentation.

Each course was introduced tableside.
Live. Personal. Thoughtful.

The chefs walked us through:

  • how the dish was prepared

  • where the inspiration came from

  • why certain ingredients were paired together

  • how the current course set the stage for what was coming next

Nothing felt rushed. Nothing felt scripted.
It was guiding, complementary, and immersive—like chapters in a story you didn’t want to end.

Each course was paired with wine, carefully selected to enhance—not overpower—the experience.

More Than a Meal

Here’s where this night separated itself from just “going out to dinner.”

This experience wasn’t only about eating well—it was about who you were eating with.

The table brought together individuals who share a common appreciation for fine dining, but more importantly, for meaningful connection. Conversations flowed naturally. Barriers dissolved. Community formed in real time.

During his closing remarks, Chef Zack shared something that stuck with me.

He said he hoped that beyond enjoying the food, guests would leave having connected with someone new—someone they might continue to dine with, build with, and create memories alongside in the future.

That’s powerful.

That’s intentional hospitality.

The Takeaway

This wasn’t just an exclusive dinner.
It was a reminder of what happens when craft, environment, and people align.

The Huffman Black provided the stage.
The chefs delivered the artistry.
The guests brought the energy.

And together, it became something that can’t be replicated—only remembered.

If this is a glimpse of what’s coming next from this collective, consider me locked in.

Because experiences like this don’t just feed you.
They stay with you.

And honestly?
I’m already ready for the next seat at the table.

Whitlee & Talan’s Stunning Wedding at White Willow Meadows

There’s nothing better than seeing love win — and Whitlee and Talan’s wedding at White Willow Meadows was proof of just that. This day was full of laughter, happy tears, and a dance floor that stayed alive well into the night.

A Luxury Barn Wedding in Orient, Ohio

In the heart of Orient, Ohio, White Willow Meadows is a breathtaking luxury barn wedding venue designed for couples who want timeless charm with a modern, upscale experience. Its sweeping outdoor views, elegant reception space, and an incredible day-of coordination team led by Ashley Briley made the entire day flow seamlessly and stress-free for Whitlee and Talan.

Love, Family & Big Celebrations

A Sneak Peek Reaction Worth Remembering

One of my favorite parts of photographing weddings is sending a sneak peek soon after the big day. When I sent Whitlee and Talan theirs, this was the response I got:

“OUR JAWS ARE TO THE FLOOR!!!!!!!! LITERALLY THE FLOOR! DEAR GOD THESE ARE AMAZING! WE ARE BLOWN AWAY SHELDON, Seriously!”

Moments like that — when a couple gets to relive their wedding so soon after saying “I do” — are what make this work so rewarding.

If you’re dreaming of a wedding filled with love, laughter, and beautiful photography, now’s the time to plan. Fall weddings at White Willow Meadows and other Ohio venues book quickly, and our team at Sheldon James Photography is ready to capture every detail and every emotion.

We don’t disappoint — from the first look to the last dance, we’ve got you covered.

Evoke at Fort Piqua Plaza: A Night of Bold Art, Empowerment, and Creative Freedom

Last night, I had the honor of attending Evoke, a transformative event hosted by Everlasting Truth Boudoir at the historic Fort Piqua Plaza. Curated by creative visionary and entrepreneur Cassie Bodnar, the evening was filled with artistry, empowerment, and unapologetic self-expression.

A Daring Blend of Art and Performance

The event featured live aerial acrobatics that captivated the crowd, bold and expressive artwork from local creatives, and a burlesque performance by The Center Stage Sirens that was both seductive and deeply empowering. Nearly 100 guests gathered to witness this one-of-a-kind cabaret-style evening, with performers traveling from northern Dayton to the Cincinnati region.

The burlesque show in particular stood out—not as mere entertainment, but as a statement of empowerment, womanhood, and authenticity. Each performance reminded the audience that self-expression is a powerful act of liberation and that we thrive when we step away from the expectations of “what it should be” and instead walk in our own light.

More Than Just a Show

While Evoke was stunning in its artistic presentation, its heart was in its mission. Everlasting Truth Boudoir ensured this event was not only about liberation and creativity but also about community impact. A portion of the proceeds from Evoke are being donated to local women’s and children’s shelters, making the event a true act of influence—bringing art and purpose together for meaningful change.

Bringing Big-City Vibes to a Small Town

The vision behind Evoke was bold: to deliver the vibe of a big-city cabaret in a small-town setting. It challenged the grain of what small-town entertainment “should be” and proved that creativity, empowerment, and authenticity are not bound by geography.

Walking in Your Own Light

Evoke wasn’t just an event—it was a movement. It called on every guest to embrace their creativity, their passions, and their truth. If you have a dream, don’t wait. Act. Put the vision together. The right people will follow.

Capture Your Own Vision with Sheldon James Photography

Events like Evoke deserve to be remembered and celebrated through powerful imagery. As a Dayton event photographer serving clients from Dayton to Cincinnati and beyond, I specialize in capturing the energy, artistry, and impact of unforgettable experiences like this.

A Lifelong Client: Capturing Six Years of Love, Growth, and Legacy at Mill Street Studio

This past weekend at the beautiful Mill Street Studio, I had the honor of photographing a family session that felt more like a reunion with old friends than work behind the lens. This wasn’t just any session—it was with a family I’ve been capturing for over six years. From their engagement shoot back in January 2019, to their wedding soon after, to each of their maternity and family sessions and vowel renewal since—this is what it truly means to have a lifelong client.

2019 Sunset Engagement Session at The University of Cincinnati

Retro Maternity Session

Wedding Reception

As a Dayton-based family and wedding photographer, there’s nothing quite like witnessing a couple’s story evolve year after year. We’ve braved Ohio winters together for engagement shots, celebrated love and laughter on their wedding day, and welcomed the soft joy of new life through maternity sessions. And now, with their growing family in tow, we’re still capturing memories—this time in a studio filled with natural light, laughter, and a whole lot of love.

Why These Sessions Matter?

When you’ve worked with a client for six years, it’s not just about photos—it’s about trust, connection, and a shared history. You learn how they laugh, how they interact, how their family grows and changes. These genuine moments—the glances, the giggles, the quiet cuddles—become the most cherished images.

That’s why I believe in building real relationships with my clients. Whether you’re just starting your journey with engagement photos, welcoming a new baby, or documenting your family each fall, I’d love to be the one to capture those milestones.

Serving Dayton, Cincinnati, and Columbus, Southern Ohio and the surrounding states

If you're located in Dayton, Cincinnati, or Columbus, Ohio, and are looking for a trusted family or wedding photographer—let’s talk. I bring not only experience and professionalism, but a commitment to capturing you in your truest light.

I’ve been lucky enough to receive dozens of 5-star reviews from couples and families who’ve trusted me with their most important moments. Don’t just take my word for it—see what others are saying and take a look at the memories we’ve created together.
