What a memorable experience at Canopy Creek Farm in Miamisburg, Ohio.

I've photographed plenty of weddings throughout Miamisburg, but this was one of those wedding days where I walked onto the property, started looking around and immediately thought...

Yeah. We're going to have some fun here.

Canopy Creek Farm gives you a little bit of everything.

Garden-party vibes.

A touch of rustic.

Timeless and romantic spaces.

Wide-open scenery.

And views that just seem to go...

and go...

and go.

But as beautiful as the venue was, Ashlynn + Zach and the people surrounding them are what made this day what it was.

These two were simply loved endlessly.

From the Moment I Arrived, I Was at Ease

I always like getting to a wedding venue with enough time to settle in.

Unload.

Set up.

Walk the property.

Check the light.

Figure out where we might want to create later.

Meet with the bride.

Connect with the coordinators and other vendors.

Get a feel for the family and wedding party.

And sometimes within those first few minutes, you can already tell what kind of wedding day you're about to have.

This was one of those days.

Starting with hair and makeup and moving through those early getting-ready moments, there was already a great energy surrounding Ashlynn.

People were excited.

People were relaxed.

And most importantly, you could tell everybody genuinely wanted this couple to have an incredible wedding day.

That's when I knew:

We're about to VIBE today.

Ashlynn + Zach Were Loved Endlessly

Some couples have a way of bringing people together.

That was Ashlynn + Zach.

Throughout the day, I kept noticing how much love surrounded them.

Family.

Friends.

Their wedding party.

Their vendors.

Everybody was invested in making sure these two enjoyed their moment.

And as a wedding photographer, that's the stuff I love documenting.

Yes, I'm going to create the portraits.

We're going to use the property.

We're going to find beautiful light.

We're going to make sure you have those timeless photographs that deserve to live on your walls.

But I'm also watching your people.

I'm looking for the reactions.

The hugs.

The laughs.

The little interactions happening behind you.

Because your wedding isn't just a collection of pretty details.

It's part of your love story.

And the people who showed up to celebrate with you are part of that history too.

And Somehow...The Rain Stayed Away

Ohio wedding weather.

You already know.

We had a heavy pop-up shower in the forecast, and of course it was threatening to arrive right around ceremony time.

Perfect timing, right?

But somehow...

It stayed away.

Instead, we got this beautiful overcast sky that completely changed the feeling of the afternoon.

Everything became soft.

Serene.

Chill.

Relaxed.

And from a photography standpoint?

I'll take that ALL DAY.

The ceremony space at Canopy Creek Farm already gives you this beautiful countryside feeling, and that soft overcast light made the entire scene feel even more romantic.

For a little while, everything just slowed down.

You had the scenery.

You had their people.

You had Ashlynn + Zach standing there together.

And Mother Nature decided to cooperate.

Thank you to the heavens above!

Canopy Creek Farm Gives You a Little Bit of Everything

One thing I really enjoyed about photographing this wedding was the variety.

Canopy Creek Farm doesn't feel like you're limited to one little corner of a property.

You can create.

You can move.

You can change the entire feeling of your photographs without having to leave the venue.

You've got the countryside.

The garden feel.

The water.

Open fields.

The barn.

Covered areas.

And plenty of room to step away with the couple and create something that feels completely different from what we were photographing 10 minutes earlier.

That's my kind of venue.

Especially for couples who want their wedding gallery to have some variety.

You can have something soft and romantic during your ceremony.

Something timeless during portraits.

Something a little more rustic around the property.

And then...

You can walk inside and completely lose your mind at the reception.

Which brings me to the next part.

Then It Was ON Like Donkey Kong

Once the ceremony and portraits were handled and we transitioned into the reception...

It was time.

This wedding party had absolutely NO limit on the fun.

And the DJ?

KILLING IT.

That's one of my favorite kinds of receptions to photograph.

Give me a DJ who knows how to read the room.

Give me a wedding party that's ready to have a good time.

Give me family and friends who didn't come to sit at their tables all night.

And let me get in the middle of it.

I'm not trying to photograph a party like I'm watching it from across the room.

I'm coming onto the dance floor.

Camera in hand.

I'm looking for the expressions.

The movement.

The people singing at each other.

The ridiculous dance moves.

The moments that nobody could have possibly planned before the wedding.

Because that's what it actually felt like.

And when Ashlynn + Zach look through this gallery years from now, I don't just want them to see that they had a reception.

I want them to remember how much FUN they had.

That's What I Want Your Wedding Photographs to Do

This is something I've been thinking about even more as this wedding season continues.

I'm documenting history.

Your history.

Your wedding photographs aren't just for Instagram next week.

They're not just something to post while everybody is still excited about the wedding.

These are photographs you're going to come back to years from now.

Scott + Lydia’s Romantic Wedding at Lostcreek Memory Barn in Casstown, Ohio

There are wedding venues that give you a beautiful place to get married, and then there are places that allow you to slow down, breathe, and truly experience the day.

Lostcreek Memory Barn in Casstown, Ohio is one of those places.

Located just outside of the Dayton area, Lostcreek Memory Barn feels like its own little sanctuary. The property is peaceful, open, and surrounded by views that seem to stretch forever. It's a working barn with plenty of rustic Ohio character, but what really stood out to me was how many different environments the property gave us to create photographs throughout the day.

And for Scott and Lydia, it couldn't have been a better setting.

A Wedding Day That Was About Being Present

When Scott and Lydia completed their wedding vibe check with me, one thing immediately stood out.

They weren't trying to create a wedding day packed with formalities.

They wanted to experience it.

They described the feeling of their wedding as romantic, timeless, bright and airy, and fun. More importantly, they wanted their photographs to communicate family, joy, excitement, and peace.

That's exactly what their day became.

There were certainly the big wedding moments—the walk down the aisle, exchanging rings, their first kiss, family portraits, first dance, father-daughter dance, reception entrance, and sunset portraits—but there was also plenty of room for everyone to simply enjoy being together.

Friends talked.

Family laughed.

People celebrated.

Scott and Lydia got married.

Sometimes that's exactly what a wedding needs to be.

The Moment Scott Saw Lydia

Before every wedding, I ask my couples which moments they're most excited to experience.

For Scott and Lydia, walking down the aisle was one of them.

And you could tell.

When Lydia came out of the bridal suite and began making her way toward the aisle, Scott couldn't hold back his emotions.

Those are the moments I love photographing because there's nothing for me to manufacture.

No pose.

No direction.

No "do that again."

Just a groom seeing his wife on their wedding day.

When couples tour venues, they imagine these moments before they ever happen. You look at the ceremony space and picture where everyone will sit. You imagine walking out of the bridal suite. You picture seeing each other from opposite ends of the aisle.

Then suddenly, after months of planning, you're actually standing there.

For Scott and Lydia, that moment was finally real.

The Bride and Groom Suites at Lostcreek Memory Barn

From a photographer's perspective, the getting-ready spaces at Lostcreek Memory Barn are a huge advantage.

The bridal suite has beautiful large windows that bring in plenty of natural light while still maintaining the vintage character that fits the property.

That combination is fantastic for photographs.

Good window light gives us opportunities for everything from details and candid getting-ready photographs to portraits before the ceremony without having to leave the suite.

The vintage feel also gives the images character without needing to manufacture a backdrop.

A Casstown Wedding Venue Made for Sunset Portraits

Then there's the property itself.

The evening light at Lostcreek Memory Barn is beautiful.

Scott and Lydia specifically told me before their wedding that sunset portraits were one of the experiences they were most excited about, so I knew we needed to protect some time for them.

The property gives you room to move.

Big trees.

Open landscapes.

The creek.

Fields and distant views.

Instead of being limited to one designated "photo spot," we could walk, explore, watch the light change, and create photographs that actually felt connected to the environment.

"If your wedding were a movie, what would it feel like?"

Sweet Home Alabama.

After experiencing their wedding, I get it.

Not because their day was trying to recreate a movie, but because there was something familiar and comfortable about it.

Romantic without needing to be overly formal.

Beautiful without feeling forced.

Family everywhere.

Friends laughing.

A little countryside.

A beautiful bride.

An emotional groom.

And two people who have already spent years building a life together finally getting to make it official.

They said that twenty years from now, they didn't simply want to remember how everything looked.

That's always the goal.

Of course we're going to create the beautiful portraits.

Elegant, Editorial & Completely Them | A Dayton Art Institute Engagement Session

There are some sessions where you walk in with a long list of things you want to accomplish.

And then there are sessions where you have a few ideas, a beautiful location, two people who trust you, and you just see where it goes.

This engagement session at the Dayton Art Institute was definitely the second one.

From the beginning, the goal was pretty simple:

Elegant.

Timeless.

Editorial.

But still them.

And honestly, that's exactly where I like to be.

Finding the Right Fit Matters

One thing that made this session a little different was that my bride works in the wedding industry herself.

So when she started looking for her own wedding vendors, she wasn't simply looking for someone who could provide a service.

She wanted the right fit for her and her fiancé.

And I can appreciate that.

We connected a little while back, talked through what they were looking for, got to know each other a little bit and ultimately decided that we would be a great fit.

That's something I continue to encourage couples to think about when they're choosing their wedding vendors.

Obviously, you should love the work.

But you're also going to spend a LOT of time with some of these people.

Especially your photographer.

You want somebody whose personality, approach and overall experience make sense for you.

By the time we got to their engagement session, there wasn't much left to figure out.

We could just create.

Editorial...Without Making It Feel Like a Production

Their vision lined up pretty naturally with how I like to photograph.

They wanted something editorial and candid.

A little polished.

A little romantic.

But nothing that felt overly staged.

Perfect.

We had a few ideas and concepts we wanted to try, so every once in a while we'd pull up one of their mood boards, look at an idea and use it as a starting point.

We'd get into a pose.

Create a few frames.

And then we'd go off script.

That's usually where things get interesting.

Maybe you move slightly differently than what we originally planned.

Maybe I notice another angle.

Maybe the light hits differently.

Maybe somebody makes a joke and suddenly the perfectly serious editorial photograph turns into both of you laughing at each other.

That's the fun part.

Inspiration should give us somewhere to start.

It doesn't have to tell us where we're going to finish.

We Didn't Need to Overdo It

I think couples sometimes believe a great engagement session needs to be this huge production.

Three locations.

Five outfits.

Twenty concepts.

Two hours of posing.

It doesn't.

This session actually went pretty fast.

We talked.

We joked.

We laughed.

We created a few intentional poses.

We walked around.

We went off script.

And once we knew we had it...

We were good.

There wasn't any reason to keep creating just for the sake of creating.

That's something I want more of my couples to understand.

Your engagement session doesn't have to feel like work.

Sometimes simple is better.

Give me a great location.

Give me an outfit that makes you feel GOOD.

Give me a little inspiration.

And then give me enough trust to see what happens.

Why the Dayton Art Institute Works So Well for Engagement Pictures

For couples looking for an elegant engagement photography location in Dayton, Ohio, the Dayton Art Institute is one of those places that immediately gives you a different feel.

The architecture alone does a lot of the work for us.

The stone.

The stairs.

The clean lines.

The scale of the building.

You can create something that feels elevated and editorial without needing a complicated setup.

And that's exactly what we wanted here.

Instead of trying to force the location to become something else, we allowed the architecture to frame them.

Put the couple in the right place.

Give them a little direction.

Then let them be themselves.

That's it.

Sometimes photography doesn't need to be more complicated than that.

Can We Get More Urban Engagement Sessions This Fall?

I'm putting this request into the universe right now.

This fall...

Let's get some more couples into the city.

I love our fields.

I love flowers.

I love golden-hour sessions surrounded by trees.

Ohio gives us some incredible natural locations for engagement photography.

But there is something completely different about an urban engagement session.

Architecture.

Concrete.

Stairs.

Parking garages.

City streets.

Storefronts.

Crosswalks.

Downtown lights.

Old buildings.

Modern buildings.

All of it gives us opportunities to create something different.

And Dayton has PLENTY of it.

You don't necessarily need a field at sunset to make your engagement photographs feel romantic.

Sometimes I want the dress.

The suit.

The city.

And the two of you.

That's enough.

Your Engagement Session Should Still Feel Like You

That's probably the biggest takeaway from this session.

We had inspiration.

We had a vision.

We wanted that elegant, timeless, editorial feeling.

But I still wanted the photographs to feel like them.

I don't want to turn you into whoever was on your Pinterest board.

I want to take the things you love about those photographs and figure out how they translate into YOUR relationship.

If you're naturally affectionate, let's use that.

If you're constantly joking with each other, I'm definitely using that.

If you're a little awkward in front of the camera, we'll probably laugh about it and somehow turn that into a photograph too.

You don't have to perform for me.

That's why I like giving couples enough direction to feel comfortable and then backing off enough to let something real happen.

That's usually the sweet spot.

Another Love Story Captured in Dayton

Another engagement session in the books.

Another couple getting closer to their wedding day.

And another opportunity to create something right here in the city of Dayton.

Sessions like this are exactly why I enjoy engagement photography.

It gives us an opportunity to learn each other before the wedding.

Kamera’s Senior Session at Heartland Farms | Tipp City, Ohio Senior Photographer

Some sessions remind me just how fast life really moves.

Recently, I had the honor of heading back to Heartland Farms in Tipp City, Ohio for Kamera’s senior photography session, and this one was special for a few different reasons.

First, Heartland Farms is quickly becoming one of those locations I already know I'll be using again and again.

Wide-open fields.

Blooming flowers.

Beautiful evening light.

Peace.

And genuinely wonderful people managing the property.

There's something about arriving here that immediately slows everything down. You get away from the busy streets, walk into the fields, and suddenly there's room to simply create.

For senior photography in Tipp City and the greater Dayton area, that's exactly the kind of space I love.

From a School-Age Kid to a High School Senior

But the location wasn't what made this session special.

Kamera did.

I've known Kamera since she was just a school-age kid.

Now I'm standing behind my camera photographing her senior pictures.

Man...

Life moves FAST.

There are moments throughout my career where photography gives me an opportunity to recognize just how much time has passed, and this was definitely one of them.

The little girl I remembered is now this bright, kind young woman getting ready to graduate from high school and figure out what's next.

That's pretty cool to witness.

And it's one of the reasons I believe senior photography matters so much.

You're documenting someone right in the middle of a transition.

Not quite finished with one chapter.

Not quite sure what the next chapter looks like.

But standing right at the beginning of it.

“I'm Still Figuring It Out.”

During our session, Kamera and I talked a little about what she wants to do after high school.

Like plenty of seniors, she doesn't have every single detail figured out yet.

And honestly?

That's completely okay.

You don't need to have your entire life mapped out at 17 or 18 years old.

What impressed me wasn't that she had a specific career picked out.

It was what she already knew about the type of person she wanted to become.

Whatever career she eventually chooses, she knows she wants to do something that allows her to help people and give back to others.

That says a lot.

It's a testament to her upbringing and the people who have poured into her.

She wants to do good in the world.

And we need more people like that.

People who care.

People who want to help.

People who understand that whatever gifts and opportunities life gives them can eventually be used to make somebody else's life a little better.

Wherever that mindset takes Kamera next, I think she's off to a pretty good start.

Senior Pictures Should Actually Feel Like You

Of course, once we got behind the camera...

We had ourselves a good time.

That's always the goal.

I don't want your senior session to feel like you're taking your school ID picture for an hour.

We'll get the clean portraits.

We'll find the good light.

We'll try different looks.

I'll give you direction when you need it.

But somewhere along the way, I want you to relax enough that your personality starts showing up in the photographs.

That's where the good stuff happens.

A real laugh.

A little movement.

Something completely unplanned.

Those are usually the photographs that end up becoming favorites.

Kamera made that part easy.

Why Heartland Farms Is Becoming One of My Favorite Senior Photo Locations

This isn't the first time I've photographed at Heartland Farms, and it definitely won't be the last.

Located in Tipp City, Ohio, Heartland Farms gives us so much room to create.

The wide-open fields provide a simple, natural backdrop.

The rows of blooming flowers can completely change the feel of a portrait.

The property gives us beautiful opportunities as the sun starts getting lower in the evening.

And maybe my favorite part?

It's peaceful.

That matters during a portrait session.

We're not constantly fighting crowds or trying to photograph around 30 other people.

We can walk.

Talk.

Find the light.

Try something.

Move somewhere else.

And just create.

The management has also been wonderful to work with, and you can tell there's a bigger vision for what this property can become.

I'm excited to keep photographing here and see how Heartland Farms continues to grow.

Senior Year Is a Bigger Moment Than You Think

Senior year is interesting because while you're living through it, everything is moving so quickly.

Football games.

Homecoming.

Classes.

Applications.

Friends.

Sports.

Prom.

Graduation.

Everybody asking you what you're doing next.

Then suddenly it's over.

That's why I want senior sessions to be more than getting a photograph for the yearbook.

This is documentation of who you are right now.

Before college.

Before the career.

Before everybody starts moving in different directions.

Before life changes again.

And trust me...

It will.

One day Kamera is going to look back at these photographs and remember exactly who she was at this point in her life.

That's what makes these sessions worth doing.

Bantam West Carrollton Pee Wee Football

First and foremost, I want to say thank you to the Bantam West Carrollton Pee Wee football team, coaches, parents, and entire organization for allowing me to come out and create some memories with you guys!

While the evening didn't end with a victory on the scoreboard, there was a lot to appreciate about what I saw throughout the game.

And as someone who has spent a lot of time around athletics, those things stood out to me.

There's More to Youth Sports Than Wins and Losses

I'm a former football coach and currently coach track and field, so whenever I'm around a youth sporting event, I'm probably paying attention to things a little differently.

Of course, we're all competitive.

We want to win.

But especially at the youth level, I'm looking at what happens between the plays too.

How are coaches communicating with their athletes?

How do kids respond when something doesn't go their way?

Are teammates encouraging each other?

Are athletes willing to listen and make adjustments?

How are parents supporting the kids?

Throughout the evening with West Carrollton, I saw a lot of positives.

Positive coaching.

Teamwork.

Coachability.

Trust.

And people who genuinely wanted these young athletes to succeed.

Those are qualities that matter.

Building Championship Habits

Championship-level programs aren't built overnight.

They're built through habits.

They're built by teaching young athletes how to listen, communicate, trust their teammates, respond to adversity, and continue working when things aren't going their way.

Winning is obviously part of sports.

But learning how to handle the nights when you don't win is important too.

I watched coaches continue coaching.

I watched kids continue competing.

I watched teammates support each other.

And I watched parents continue encouraging their athletes.

Those are the building blocks.

Keep stacking enough of those moments together and eventually the scoreboard starts taking care of itself.

These Are the Moments They'll Remember

That's also why I enjoy photographing youth sports.

The final score will eventually be forgotten.

But these kids are going to remember playing football with their friends.

They're going to remember their teammates.

They're going to remember putting that uniform on.

They're going to remember Mom and Dad standing on the sideline.

And years from now, these photographs become a way to revisit all of it.

Some of my favorite images aren't necessarily the biggest plays.

Sometimes it's a kid listening to his coach.

A teammate helping another teammate.

The look right before the snap.

The celebration afterward.

A parent watching from the sideline.

Those little moments tell the story too.

12 Years of Choosing Each Other | Breane + Algia’s Benham’s Grove Wedding in Centerville, Ohio

Some wedding days are about the beginning of a relationship.

Breane + Algia’s wedding was different.

This was about celebrating a love that had already been lived.

For 12 years, these two have experienced life together. They’ve laughed together, grown together, experienced loss together, built a life together and, most importantly, continued choosing one another through all of it.

So when their wedding day finally arrived at Benham’s Grove in Centerville, Ohio, there wasn’t much left to question.

12 Years Before “I Do”

One thing about being a wedding photographer is that I get a front-row seat to people's stories.

And I love that part of this job.

Because once you understand what it took for two people to arrive at their wedding day, everything you're photographing starts to mean a little more.

During their vows, Breane + Algia talked about what 12 years together actually means.

They've gotten to experience love beyond the honeymoon phase.

They've experienced life.

They've experienced change.

They've experienced the loss of a furry member of their family.

They've had the opportunity to see each other on the great days and probably a few of those days where somebody is getting patience tested.

And through all of it, they've had an honest opportunity to make the same decision over and over again:

That's what made this wedding feel different.

It was a celebration of a choice they've already been making every single day.

There is something incredibly powerful about that.

You could see it in the energy throughout the day.

You could hear it in the laughter.

You could feel it during the emotional moments.

“Father of the Bride”

Before their wedding, we asked Breane + Algia a question that helps us understand how they want their wedding to feel:

If your wedding were a movie, what would it feel like?

Their answer?

Father of the Bride.

A wedding where everyone genuinely enjoys being together.

Lots of laughter mixed with some happy tears.

That told me almost everything I needed to know.

Because our job wasn't to manufacture a wedding day that looked good for Instagram.

We needed to document what was already there.

A few formal moments mixed with plenty of real ones.

And most importantly, two people having a really good time celebrating the life they've already created together.

The Photograph Is Bigger Than the Photograph

We also asked them another question:

If we could tell only ONE story from your wedding day, what would it be?

Breane's answer stuck with me.

She imagined the two of them sitting together at their sweetheart table, now officially husband and wife, looking out at the room.

People eating.

Drinking.

Talking.

Laughing.

Dancing.

Family.

Friends.

Everybody they love gathered in one place.

And the feeling she wanted to remember wasn't complicated.

Happiness.

Happy for themselves.

Happy for everyone who came.

Happy to finally be husband and wife.

That's the picture.

And I don't just mean literally taking a photograph of them sitting at the sweetheart table.

It's what that photograph represents.

Give Me the Laughter AND the Happy Tears

This wedding had the balance I love.

We had our formal moments.

We created our portraits.

We gave direction when direction was needed.

But Breane + Algia also gave themselves permission to actually enjoy their wedding.

I want the big smiles.

I want somebody laughing so hard the "perfect pose" falls apart.

I want the wedding party being themselves.

I want Mom getting emotional.

Cox Arboretum MetroPark

Cox Arboretum MetroPark features mature trees, open fields, gardens and walking trails. The variety of scenery allows us to capture traditional family portraits along with relaxed and candid moments.

Smith Memorial Gardens

Located in Oakwood, Smith Memorial Gardens provides a smaller and more intimate garden setting. Its beautiful greenery and charming natural details make it an excellent choice for smaller families, couples, children and maternity portraits.

Oakes Quarry Park

Oakes Quarry Park in Fairborn offers open fields, trails, stone textures and rustic scenery. This location is ideal for families who want their portraits to have a more adventurous and earthy appearance.

For families who prefer an urban look, we can photograph just outside Dayton’s Oregon District neighborhood. The surrounding city streets, brick buildings, textured walls and architectural details provide a stylish and modern background for fall family portraits.

What Is Included?

Each 2026 Fall Mini Session will include:

• A 30-minute photography session

• Your choice of an available location

• Individual and family photographs

• 10 professionally edited, high-resolution digital images

• A private online gallery

• Personal printing and sharing rights

• The option to purchase additional images or upgrade to the complete gallery

Sessions will be scheduled in specific 30-minute time blocks on select dates. Families should arrive prepared and on time because additional session time cannot be guaranteed for late arrivals.

Fall Mini Session Pricing

The investment for a 2026 Fall Mini Session is $225. A non-refundable $75 retainer is required to reserve your approved date, time and location. The remaining $150 balance must be paid before the session.

Additional professionally edited images may be purchased for $25 each. Families who would like every edited image from their session will have the option to upgrade to the complete gallery for an additional $125.

A Saturday Well Spent | Alexas + Greg at The Haycraft in Kentucky

Some weddings you leave with a bunch of great photographs.

Other weddings you leave thinking, “Man, those are just some good people.”

Alexas + Greg gave us a little bit of both.

This weekend took us across state lines for our first wedding at The Haycraft in Kentucky, and from the moment we arrived, I knew we were going to have a good day.

New venue. New spaces to explore. New people to meet.

Let's get to work.

First Time at The Haycraft

One of my favorite parts of being a wedding photographer is getting the opportunity to walk into a venue I've never photographed before.

There's no routine yet.

I'm looking around thinking, “Okay, what can we do over here?”

“What's this light going to look like later?”

“Can I get them outside for five minutes?”

It's basically a giant creative playground.

And The Haycraft was a fun one.

The first thing that stood out to me was SPACE.

The upstairs getting-ready areas give the bridal party plenty of room to spread out, get comfortable, turn some music on and actually enjoy the morning.

Anybody who has ever been part of a wedding knows how quickly a getting-ready room can turn into dresses, bags, makeup, food, curling irons, shoes, flowers and 15 people asking where somebody's phone is.

Having room matters.

From there, you've got dedicated ceremony and reception areas, plus a nice combination of urban surroundings and green outdoor spaces for portraits.

For my first time photographing a wedding at The Haycraft, I definitely left with some ideas for the next time I'm back.

That's always a good sign.

And the Staff? They Were ON IT.

I have to show some love to the staff at The Haycraft.

They took care of Alexas + Greg.

Period.

Throughout the day, you could see them checking in, making adjustments, helping vendors and making sure the couple wasn't spending their wedding day worrying about things they shouldn't have to worry about.

That's something I appreciate.

Because the best wedding venues aren't necessarily the ones with the biggest chandeliers or the craziest architecture.

It's the venue where the bride and groom actually get to enjoy being the bride and groom.

Let somebody else handle the rest.

Everyone Laughed ALL DAY

This is probably what I'll remember most about this day

They laughed.

And laughed.

And laughed some more.

They joked with each other throughout the day, and nothing ever felt overly serious or forced.

That's my kind of wedding.

I tell my couples this all the time:

You're allowed to enjoy your wedding.

Actually, PLEASE enjoy your wedding.

You spent months planning this thing.

Don't spend the entire day worrying about whether a napkin is facing the right direction.

If something happens, we'll figure it out.

If we're five minutes behind, we'll catch up.

If somebody is standing where they aren't supposed to be, we'll move them.

If the weather changes, we'll find another spot.

Meanwhile...

Go love on your person.

That's exactly what Alexas + Greg did.

And it shows in the photographs.

Then I Learned We Have MySpace to Thank for All of This

This might have been my favorite random piece of information from the entire wedding.

At some point during the day, I learned that MySpace played a role in the beginning of Alexas + Greg's story.

MYSPACE.

Listen...

If you're old enough to immediately picture Tom's profile picture, we're officially showing our age.

But seriously, think about that.

A social media platform from nearly 20 years ago helped create an interaction that eventually turned into...

This.

A wedding.

Family.

Friends traveling to celebrate.

Two people standing together saying yes to forever.

That's actually pretty cool when you think about it.

Apparently MySpace is trying to make a comeback too, so who knows?

Maybe we're about to start getting MySpace love stories again.

The People Around You Matter

Something else I really appreciated about this wedding was how thankful Alexas + Greg were for everybody around them.

You could feel it.

Their family showed up.

Their friends showed up.

Their wedding party showed up.

And people genuinely seemed happy to be there celebrating them.

Not just attending a wedding.

Celebrating THEM.

There's a difference.

That's why I love learning the stories behind my couples.

I want to know how you met.

I want to know who has been there since the beginning.

I want to know why your best man is your best man.

I want to know why Mom is crying before you even put the dress on.

Because once you understand the relationships, the photographs mean something different.

You're not just photographing “a guest hugging the bride.”

You're photographing somebody who has been beside her for 20 years.

That's the story.

Keep Your Wedding Day Light

If there's anything I'd tell future brides and grooms after photographing this wedding, it's exactly what Alexas + Greg showed us:

Keep it light.

Laugh.

Make jokes.

Be weird together.

Take five minutes away from everybody.

Dance.

Talk to Grandma.

Hug your parents.

Actually eat your dinner.

Look around the room at some point and realize that all of these people came here because they love you.

And every once in a while...

Forget the photographer is standing there.

I'll still get the picture.

That's actually when I usually get the good stuff anyway.

Loving the Vibes of Wedding Season | Lily + Alhmad at Magnolia Estate of Miamisburg

I don't know what it is about this wedding season, but I'm loving the vibes already.

The people.

The energy.

The emotions.

The packed dance floors.

And even when we start the day with a little rain, somehow everything has a way of coming together.

This weekend brought us back to Magnolia Estate in Miamisburg, Ohio, for the wedding of Lily + Alhmad—and this one was FUN.

Rain or Shine, We're Getting Married

Here's the thing about planning an August wedding in Ohio:

You have to keep your plans on a swivel.

You might wake up to pouring rain.

Two hours later, you could have direct sunlight and 90-degree temperatures.

Then somehow the clouds roll in, there's a slight breeze, and suddenly it feels like the beginning of fall.

Welcome to Ohio.

But that's exactly why having a wedding venue with great indoor and outdoor options matters.

Back at Magnolia Estate of Miamisburg

Magnolia Estate has become a staple wedding venue in the Miamisburg and Dayton, Ohio area, and it's a property I've had the opportunity to photograph many times throughout my career as a wedding photographer.

That's always fun for me because every couple gives a familiar venue an entirely different personality.

Different people.

Different weather.

Different energy.

Different stories.

And Lily + Alhmad definitely brought their own energy.

From the little ones running around to the wedding party and everyone surrounding the bride and groom, there was never a shortage of personality.

This was a high-energy group from beginning to end.

And I loved every minute of it.

Family From Near and Far

One thing that stood out throughout Lily and Alhmad's wedding was how many people came together to celebrate them.

Family traveled from all over to be there.

And you could feel how much it meant.

That's one of those things photographs can't completely explain, but they can certainly preserve.

The hugs that last a little longer.

Someone seeing a family member they haven't seen in forever.

Parents looking at their children realizing they're officially married.

Friends immediately turning the energy up when the music starts.

The little kids completely ignoring whatever adults told them they were supposed to be doing.

Those are the real moments.

Everyone played a role in making sure this day felt special and intentionally created for Lily and Alhmad.

And that's what a wedding should feel like.

I Love When We Get to Vibe With Our Couples

If you've followed Sheldon James Photography for any amount of time, you probably already know I'm not interested in spending your entire wedding day making you stand perfectly still.

Of course we're going to get the beautiful portraits.

We're going to get the family photographs.

We're going to create the classic wedding images that deserve a spot on the wall.

But then?

I want you to go enjoy your wedding.

Laugh.

Cry.

Hug your people.

Do something awkward.

Bust a move.

Forget the camera is even there.

Because that's where some of my favorite photographs live.

In between everything you planned.

And when that reception starts getting crazy, don't expect me to be standing 30 feet away watching everything happen.

I'm probably somewhere in the middle of the dance floor with you.

Camera in hand.

Dodging somebody's uncle.

Trying not to get stepped on.

And capturing every second of it.

That's part of the experience.

Give Me the Real Emotions

I think that's what I'm appreciating most about this wedding season.

The real stuff.

Wedding photography can be beautiful without everything being perfect.

Sometimes the rain is part of the story.

Sometimes somebody misses their cue.

Sometimes the bride can't stop laughing.

Sometimes the groom gets emotional when nobody expected it.

That's a wedding.

That's life.

And those are the photographs I want.

I want the images that remind you exactly how the room felt.

Wedding Season Is Here. Before You Book a Single Vendor, Read This.

There's something special about this time of year.

Summer is always busy with weddings, but in Ohio, August through early November is when everything really comes alive. Wedding vendors get busier, engagement season starts to build, websites see more traffic, social media fills up with proposals, and couples begin taking those first exciting steps toward planning one of the biggest days of their lives.

As someone who has spent more than 13 years in the wedding industry, I feel a responsibility to help not only brides and grooms, but also parents, bridal parties, maids and matrons of honor, best men, and anyone else helping plan a wedding. Every year I like to write something like this because I remember what it felt like to plan my first wedding—there are hundreds of vendors, thousands of opinions, and everyone claims they're the perfect fit. It can be overwhelming.

So before you start booking vendors, here are a few things I hope you'll think about.

Ask yourself:

• Is there enough room for everyone?

• Will guests feel comfortable?

• Is it accessible?

• Does it fit your vision?

• Does it provide a great experience for your vendors?

At the end of the day, you're hosting one of the biggest gatherings of your lives. Your venue becomes the foundation that everything else is built around.

If someone pressures you into making a decision before you've had time to think, ask questions, or verify who they are, that's a major red flag.

Saving a few hundred dollars isn't worth risking your entire wedding budget.

Slow down.

Ask questions.

Trust your instincts.

This was my first opportunity to photograph a wedding at this incredible venue, and I can honestly say—I hope it's the first of many.

One of my favorite features is the custom-built gazebo. It's the perfect location for an emotional first look, a quiet first touch before the ceremony, or simply a private moment together before the celebration begins.

Another feature that immediately caught my attention was the manmade waterfall. Not only does it create beautiful scenery for portraits, but the sound of flowing water adds a peaceful atmosphere that makes the entire property feel calm and inviting.

It's obvious that the team behind Heavenly View has put a tremendous amount of thought into what makes a wedding venue truly memorable.

One detail I really appreciated was having dedicated bridal and groom suites right on the property.

A Surprise Proposal at Ault Park in Cincinnati | Brandon + Racquel (Rocky)

There are moments in life that deserve more than a photograph—they deserve to be remembered exactly as they happened.

This surprise proposal at Ault Park in Cincinnati, Ohio was one of those moments.

When Brandon first reached out to me with his vision, I knew this wasn't just another proposal. This wasn't about creating a social media moment. It was about honoring years of memories, keeping a promise alive, and giving the love of his life a surprise she would never forget.

As a Cincinnati proposal photographer, these are the stories I love being a part of.

The Story Behind the Ring

Every relationship has a beginning.

For Brandon and Racquel (better known as Rocky), that beginning came through a shared love of cars and lowered trucks.

Early in their relationship, the two worked a remodeling job together and decided to spend the money on an old lowered square-body Chevrolet Suburban. It wasn't running, but they had dreams of bringing it back to life together.

Life, however, had different plans.

The project sat untouched for nearly two years. During that time, they bought a home, started building a future together, eventually sold the truck, and welcomed their son, Rowan, into the world.

When the truck was sold to a close friend, Rocky cried—not because it was simply an old truck, but because it represented where their story began.

Brandon never forgot that.

Unknown to Rocky, he stayed in contact with the truck's new owner for years. He made one simple request:

"If you ever decide to sell it, I want the first opportunity to buy it back."

Not because he wanted another project.

Because he already knew exactly how he wanted to propose.

Planning the Perfect Surprise Proposal at Ault Park

Brandon's vision was incredibly thoughtful.

He wanted to bring Rocky to one of Cincinnati's most iconic locations—Ault Park's beautiful pergola overlooking Lunken Airport and the Cincinnati skyline.

The plan was simple.

The two of them would walk up to the overlook and take in the view together. While Rocky admired the scenery, someone would quietly drive the truck up behind them. She would turn around, completely surprised to see the truck that started their relationship, and before she even had time to process it all...

Brandon would already be down on one knee.

Not only asking her to marry him, but telling her he had secretly bought back the truck that had started everything between them years before.

It was one of the most thoughtful proposal ideas I've ever had the privilege of photographing.

Blending Into the Moment

To help keep the surprise intact, I arrived early and launched my drone ahead of time, positioning it high among the trees overlooking the pergola.

After that, I simply took my place near the overlook with my camera, looking like any other photographer enjoying a beautiful afternoon at Ault Park.

Brandon and Rocky walked past me just like countless other visitors. We exchanged a couple casual interactions, but nothing that would make anyone think twice. The entire goal was to let the moment happen naturally without making anyone feel like something special was about to unfold.

Sometimes the best thing a photographer can do is simply be present without becoming part of the story.

The Moment Everything Changed

Then it happened.

Brandon dropped to one knee.

Time seemed to slow down.

The emotion.

The surprise.

The tears.

The laughter.

Family watching nearby.

Every expression told a piece of the story.

The best photographs aren't created because someone is looking at the camera.

They're created because, for just a moment, people completely forget the camera is even there.

As soon as Rocky said yes, everything changed.

I went from being another photographer enjoying the park to being their photographer, documenting every hug, every happy tear, every smile, and every reaction from the family who had been waiting to celebrate alongside them.

Those first few minutes after a proposal are some of the most emotional you'll ever experience, and they disappear in the blink of an eye.

One More Surprise

As incredible as the proposal itself was...

Brandon still had one final surprise waiting.

Just across the street at Heekin Overlook, sitting polished, cleaned up, and ready to drive...

...was the truck.

The very truck that started their relationship years earlier.

Watching Rocky realize that Brandon had quietly bought it back after all these years was every bit as emotional as the proposal itself.

It wasn't just a truck.

It represented where they met.

The dreams they shared.

The home they built together.

The family standing beside them.

And the next chapter they were about to begin together.

It was one of those full-circle moments that reminds you why photographs matter.

You Don't Need an Over-the-Top Proposal

One of my favorite things about Brandon's proposal is that it wasn't built around impressing strangers.

It was built around impressing the one person who mattered most.

You don't need fireworks.

You don't need live singers.

You don't need a mariachi band.

And you definitely don't need squirrels doing backflips in the background.

What you need is intention.

Make it personal.

Make it meaningful.

Make it authentic.

Show the person you're asking to spend forever with that you've been thinking about this moment long before today.

One of my favorite parts about engagement sessions is that they rarely feel like a photoshoot. They feel like an evening spent getting to know two people before one of the biggest days of their lives. Jamie and Zach's session in Dayton's Oregon District was exactly that.

Marriage isn't just about the wedding day—it's about the family you're building together, and getting to capture a little bit of that is something I'll never take for granted.

As we wandered through the brick streets of the Oregon District, we kept things simple. We laughed, we did a few twirls, stopped wherever the light looked beautiful, and let the evening unfold naturally. Some of my favorite images are the ones that happen between the poses—the genuine smiles, the conversations, and the little moments that aren't forced.

One thing I always try to do during engagement sessions is use the time to really get to know my couples. We talked about what their wedding day will look like, the moments they're most excited for, and what they hope they'll remember twenty years from now. Those conversations help me understand who they are, and they allow me to photograph their wedding day in a way that feels personal instead of just following a timeline.

That's one of the reasons I love engagement sessions so much. They're less about taking photos and more about building trust. By the time the wedding day arrives, we're not strangers anymore—we're simply picking up where we left off.

From our very first consultation, it was obvious these two were just a hardworking carefree couple. They loved to have fun in their own special ways. Before every wedding, we have our couples complete what we call our Vibe Check . It's one of our favorite parts of the planning process because it gives us a glimpse into who they are, what matters most to them, and how they hope to remember their day years from now. Rebecca and Hudson's answers were full of fun, family, romance, and timeless moments... and they lived every bit of it.

From the hilarious faux first look that had everyone laughing to one unforgettable moment after another with family and friends, this wedding never slowed down. Every part of the day had its own personality, and you could genuinely feel how much these two were loved.

Now... we have to talk about the hobby horses.

You cannot convince me that Rebecca and Hudson didn't have one of the coolest grand entrances as husband and wife. While most couples simply walk into their reception, these two came charging in on hobby horses like they were riding full-blown stallions, and the entire room absolutely loved it. It was unexpected, hilarious, and honestly one of those moments that perfectly summed up who they are as a couple. It wasn't about putting on a show—it was about having fun together, and everyone in the room got to be part of it.

Lucky 7 Barn was the perfect setting for a day like this. During the summer and fall, the property has such a peaceful, dreamy atmosphere while still giving couples plenty of space to celebrate with the people they love. It's one of those venues that naturally creates an incredible wedding experience.

Some weddings are beautiful.

Some weddings are emotional.

And then there are weddings like Sam and Darren's that feel like a family reunion.

As a photographer, I get invited into some of the most important moments of people's lives. But every once in a while, I get the opportunity to photograph a wedding that's deeply personal to me too. This was one of those days.

Darren and I go way back—like four flats on a Cadillac. Somewhere around 30 years of friendship, perspective, I’m 34.

We grew up together in the Valley View Apartments. My brothers and I spent countless days with Darren and his brothers, and even after life took us in different directions, a few of us ended up renting a house together in Miamisburg. It was one of those seasons of life where we'd work, hang out, play some games, grab food at Steak 'n Shake at 2 a.m., and just enjoy being young.

One night—actually on my birthday—we all went over to Bar 145. That's where I remember Darren really connecting with Sam. He told us about this girl he'd been talking to, but in my mind I figured they'd hang out for a while and that would probably be the end of it.

I couldn't have been more wrong.

The two of them spent the night locked into each other's world. You could tell they genuinely enjoyed being together. There was excitement, comfort, and something that just felt... different.

After that, Sam became a regular around the house. She fit right in. We laughed together, shared moments together, and made memories that I didn’t particularly know would eventually become part of their love story.

As the years passed, we all moved into different homes and different seasons of life. I remember helping Darren move one day, and even then it was obvious to me where this story was headed. Sam and Darren would be present side by side at many of the family gatherings and social events. I was like yeah, its all coming soon, its just a matter of time.

Some people just make sense together.

They're both unapologetic Swifties, they're both incredibly genuine, and they're the kind of people who care deeply—not just for each other, but for everyone around them. They bring kindness into every room they walk into, and that's something you can't fake.

Watching them promise forever to one another at Receptions Event Center in Fairfield, Ohio wasn't just another wedding for me.

It was watching years of friendship turn into a lifelong commitment.

To Sam and Darren—thank you.

Thank you for trusting me with something so important. Being there wasn't just special because I was your photographer. It was special because I got to experience the day as a friend, as family, as someone who has watched this story unfold from the very beginning.

One of my favorite parts about being a wedding photographer isn't actually taking the pictures.

It's getting to know the people.

Over the years, I've learned something pretty important. No two weddings are ever the same. Sure, they all have a ceremony, speeches, a first dance, and cake... but that's where the similarities usually end.

Every couple has a different story.

Different families.

Different traditions.

Different personalities.

Different dreams for what they hope their wedding day feels like.

So why would we photograph every wedding the same way?

That's a question I've been asking myself a lot lately.

It starts long before the wedding day.

One thing I've realized after photographing weddings for over a decade is that some of the best photographs aren't created because I happened to be standing in the right place at the right time.

They're created because we prepared for them.

Not because they're staged.

Not because they're fake.

But because we knew what mattered.

Maybe it's a staircase your grandmother loves.

Maybe it's a tree where you got engaged.

Maybe it's a sunset you've dreamed about since you booked your venue.

Those things don't happen by accident.

They're discovered through conversations.

That's why we're introducing something new.

Instead of simply showing up on your wedding day with cameras and hoping we find the best moments...

We're going to build them together.
