How Lighting & Venue Impact Wedding Photography Style (And What Every Bride Needs to Know)

When you're planning your wedding, it's easy to get caught up in the visuals you see on Instagram or Pinterest: soft, glowing “light and airy” portraits, rich and romantic “dark and moody” edits, or clean, true-to-life timeless captures. All of these styles are beautiful—but here's the truth most photographers don’t talk about:

Your venue, lighting conditions, and time of day will impact how your wedding photos actually look—no matter what editing style your photographer uses.

Light and Airy, Partly cloudy skies, Underneath shading from the wedding venue

At Sheldon James Photography, we believe in educating our couples so they can make confident, well-informed decisions before they book their wedding photographer. Let's break this down simply, and help you understand how photography styles and lighting work together.

What Do Photography Styles Really Mean?

Before we talk about lighting, let’s define the three most common editing styles:

  • Light & Airy – Bright, soft, romantic tones. Think sunshine, pastels, and glow.

  • Dark & Moody – Rich contrast, shadows, and emotion. Often warm and dramatic.

  • Timeless & Classic – Clean edits with natural color, balanced contrast, and a true-to-life aesthetic that never feels trendy or dated.

Dark and Moody- True to tone ( Indoor Barn style wedding venue) Tight space ( dance floor approx 500-1000 sqft

While many photographers label themselves with one of these styles, the look of your final photos depends just as much on the lighting and setting of your day as it does on their editing process.

Bride standing near Silo- Near sunset, Partly cloudy day ( Soft sun lighting the brides front)

Bride and Groom First dance- Floor to celling windows with harsh sun poking through the window

Golden Hour ( lighting behind bride and groom - no eternal light source - intended lens flare - Because of the light position, could give the impression of a dark and moody

Real Talk: Lighting Changes Everything

Imagine three couples, each hiring the same photographer. One gets married at golden hour in an open field, one inside a candlelit church, and one under full noon sun with no shade.

Even if the editing style stays the same, the light tells a different story in each image.

☀️ Bright, Full Sun

  • Can create harsh shadows, uneven light, and squinting.

  • Light & Airy photographers may struggle to get softness unless there's access to shade.

  • Dark & Moody photographers can lean into contrast but risk losing detail.

  • Timeless photographers will often reposition couples for more flattering light.

Partly cloudy- Full sun day- No Shade- Ceremony entrance of Bride and the Father of the Bride

☁️ Overcast Days

  • Dreamy, soft, and even lighting across the board.

  • Light & Airy styles shine here—literally!

  • Dark & Moody editors have more room to play without harsh contrast.

  • Timeless photographers benefit from the neutral tones and skin balance.

💡 Low Light (Indoor Ceremonies or Receptions)

  • Light & Airy photographers may struggle to keep their signature brightness unless artificial lighting is used.

  • Dark & Moody photographers often embrace this ambiance—it’s their sweet spot.

  • Timeless photographers will adapt with flash or lighting to keep images sharp, clean, and natural.

Bride and Groom first dance- No natural light available- Photographer incorporates external lighting systems that operate in collection with camera system to provide adequate lighting

Why Soft Light Wins (Almost Every Time)

Harsh light (think direct midday sun) can make even the most glamorous couple look washed out or shadowy.
Soft light (like cloudy skies, window lighting, or sunset glow) flatters skin, brings out color, and creates that magical feel everyone loves.

Good photographers know how to work with both, but soft light will always be more forgiving and flattering—no matter the editing style.

Brides, Here’s What You Really Need to Consider

Instead of picking a photographer based solely on an Instagram aesthetic, ask:

  • 📍 Will my venue provide lighting that supports the look I love?

  • 📷 Have I seen full wedding galleries in different lighting conditions from this photographer?

  • 🔦 Can this photographer handle any lighting scenario—rainy, sunny, indoor, or low light?

At Sheldon James Photography, we’re committed to showing you the full picture—not just the highlight reel. When you inquire with us, we’ll send you real weddings in bright sun, cloudy skies, and even dark reception halls—so you can feel confident in what we deliver.

A Classic and Chic Wedding at The Reverie in Miamisburg, Ohio

There’s something special about a wedding day that blends timeless tradition with modern elegance—and Summer and Alex’s celebration at The Reverie in Miamisburg, Ohio was exactly that. As a wedding photographer, I get to witness many love stories, but this one stood out with its refined style, joyful energy, and meaningful moments from start to finish.

The Reverie: A Dream Wedding Venue in the Dayton Area

If you’ve been searching for wedding venues near Dayton, Ohio, you’ve probably come across The Reverie—and for good reason. This upscale, all-white venue with clean architectural lines and natural light is designed with the modern couple in mind. With over 7,000 square feet of space, flexible indoor/outdoor ceremony options, and a stunning bridal suite, The Reverie makes it easy to host a wedding that’s both sophisticated and inviting.

For Summer and Alex, it was the perfect place to bring their vision to life.

The Reverie Reception Hall can accommodate 250 guests for a seated dinner

Ceremony: Tradition with a Touch of Elegance

Summer walked down the aisle in a classic, floor-length gown that looked like something out of a magazine. Alex, in a tailored black tux, couldn’t stop smiling as she made her entrance. The ceremony setup at The Reverie created a beautifully minimal backdrop, allowing their love and emotion to be the true centerpiece.

From the floral arrangements to the soft neutral color palette, every detail was thought out with care—an aesthetic that reflected both timeless tradition and chic design.

Reception: A Celebration to Remember

Once the vows were said and the rings were exchanged, it was time to party—and this group came ready. The Reverie’s open-concept layout flowed perfectly for dinner, speeches, and dancing. String lights and custom decor added warmth and personality to the space, making it feel intimate even in a large room.

Guests danced the night away, and we captured everything from emotional first dances to candid laughs on the dance floor. The love in the room was undeniable, and the energy was pure joy.

Why We Love Photographing Weddings at The Reverie

As a Dayton wedding photographer, venues like The Reverie are a dream to shoot in. The clean design, white walls, high ceilings, and large windows make every photo pop. It’s the kind of space that adapts beautifully to any wedding style—whether it’s minimal and modern, vintage-inspired, or a mix of classic and contemporary like Summer and Alex’s.

Plus, The Reverie’s location in Miamisburg, just minutes from Dayton, makes it incredibly convenient for local and out-of-town guests alike.

Urban Rodeo Vibes: A Fairmont High School Senior Photo Session in Dayton, Ohio

At Sheldon James Photography, we believe every senior deserves portraits that capture who they truly are—and this recent Kettering Fairmont High School senior session was the perfect blend of personality, style, and grit.

We headed into downtown Dayton, Ohio for an urban senior photo shoot that highlighted two completely different sides of our client’s identity: rodeo cowboy and classic prep. As a two-sport athlete from Fairmont High School in Kettering, Ohio, he wanted to represent both his rural roots and his professional side. The final gallery gave him exactly that—authentic, stylish, and unforgettable.

Look One: Rodeo Meets the City

Wearing cowboy boots, denim jeans, a Western-style button-down, and of course, his hat, this senior brought the rodeo to the city streets. The textures of Dayton’s brick buildings, metal staircases, and graffiti-lined walls created a gritty, contrasting backdrop that made the cowboy aesthetic pop in a way that was bold and editorial.

Look Two: Polished and Timeless

For his second look, we changed gears with a classic polo and khaki combo. Clean, simple, and timeless—this outfit gave us the perfect opportunity to shoot in brighter light and frame up portraits that will look amazing on graduation announcements, in family photo albums, and anywhere else he wants to show off this milestone.

Celebrating a Fairmont High School Standout

We’re so proud to have worked with this accomplished student-athlete. Between academics and two sports, he’s put in the work—and it shows. Congratulations on a great season, and best of luck as you step into adulthood with the same determination and heart.

Things I Think About When Photographing a Wedding

If you're a wedding photographer, you already know: no two weddings are the same—and that’s exactly what makes this job beautiful, frustrating, and endlessly inspiring.

After years behind the camera, shooting everything from humid July ceremonies to crisp October elopements, I’ve learned that showing up with technical skill isn’t enough. You’ve got to shoot with your whole self—your heart, your instincts, and sometimes, your inner 5-year-old.

So here are some of the things I think about when I’m documenting a wedding. These aren’t rules. These are reminders—creative cues, mindset shifts, and little ways I stay connected to the real reason I’m doing this in the first place.

1. Get What You Need, Then Lose the Rules

Of course, we all have a checklist: vows, kiss, first dance, parent toasts, cake cut. These are non-negotiables.

But once you have the essentials, break free. Lose the rules. That’s when the real creativity kicks in.

Fine detail shots of wedding dress- timeless black and white moments of Mother of the Bride and Bride, Moments that will be cherished by the next generations to come within that family.

-Lay on the ground.
-Shoot through champagne glasses.
-Tilt your camera like you forgot how to hold it.
-Snap the in-betweens: the hair being pinned, the flower girl yawning, the crooked tie fixed in a rearview mirror.

I always ask myself: “What would this look like if I didn’t care about what ‘works’?”
That’s where the creativity lives.

2. Shoot Like a 5-Year-Old

Honestly, just do it.

After the key shots are done, I tap into that childlike wonder—because five-year-olds don’t care about symmetry, they care about feelings.

They get close.
They look up.
They forget the rules.
They notice weird things like shiny shoes or the way light hits a wall.

Cincinnati city skyline with Bride and Groom out of focus - The word Cincinnati is etched out in the center of the image.

Sometimes I crouch down or stand on chairs. I play with blur. I chase light like I’m chasing a butterfly.
If you can tap into that mindset—curiosity over control—you’ll capture magic that even the couple didn’t notice on their wedding day.

3. Ask Better Questions

Before the camera ever comes out, I ask couples weird questions.

Not "What are your colors?"
But things like:

  • “If your wedding had a theme song, what would it be?”

  • “Would you rather have a golden-hour portrait or a kiss-in-the-rain photo?”

  • “Are you more summer sun or fall wind?”

Bride and Groom portrait session following the wedding ceremony outdoor backyard wedding | West Virginia

These types of questions help me understand how they feel—not just how they want to look. Though each wedding day will give you different weather elements, these questions will help you gain a new perspective of their personality.

Weddings are emotional, layered, unpredictable. If you can understand who your couple is underneath the Pinterest boards, your photos will tell their story with real depth.

4. Read the Season Like a Story

Seasonality matters. It affects more than the lighting—it changes the mood of a wedding.

☀️ Summer Weddings:

  • More light, more movement, more energy.

  • I lean into warm tones, motion blur, lens flare, and bold edits.

  • It’s sweaty, chaotic, and fun. I shoot that.

Groom entering the ceremony following behind the pastor

🍂 Fall Weddings:

  • Slower, moodier, more cinematic.

  • I lean into contrast, shadows, cozy textures, candlelight, and emotional weight.

  • I look for the quiet moments: fingers intertwined, soft glances, deep breaths.

Bride and Groom portrait session near The Cleveland Railway Bridge" (also known as the "Old Coast Guard Station Bridge") near the West Bank of the Flats or near the Nautica Entertainment Complex on the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland, Ohio.

Ask yourself, “What does this season feel like?” Then let your editing, angles, and pacing reflect it.

5. Document for Now and Forever

One of my favorite questions to ask a couple is:

“What’s more important to you: a photo that could go viral this week, or one your grandchildren will cherish in 40 years?”

Sometimes, you have to go to the Flower man vs picking a traditional flower girl, You just know there’s going to be a party at this event - The Estate At Sunset Farm | Centerville Ohio

Sometimes the answer is both—and that’s okay.

But it helps me know when to go hard on trend-forward content (like drone shots and flash edits) and when to pull back and focus on timeless, story-first photography.

Being able to balance relevance and permanence is what sets a good wedding photographer apart from a great one.

6. Stay Curious, Stay Human

The technical side matters. I love a sharp prime lens and golden-hour backlighting as much as anyone.

But honestly? The most important tool I carry is curiosity.

Bride and Groom letting loose and dancing with friends and family at Polen Farm, a small, quaint and rustic wedding venue | Kettering Ohio

  • I watch the room.

  • I listen more than I talk.

  • I step back when a moment is unfolding.

  • I move in when no one else is watching.

Being a wedding photographer in 2025 is not about following a style guide. It’s about capturing something so personal it feels like poetry when they look at it five years later. You have to think about it, you’re likely going to spend the majority of the day with your client, you will want them to invite you in as an honorary member of their wedding party.

Final Thoughts: Be the Photographer You Needed

Every wedding I shoot, I remember the responsibility I have—not just to make it look good, but to make it real.

If you’re a photographer: trust your eye, trust your gut, and never stop experimenting.

Shoot what’s obvious. Then shoot what’s invisible.

Because that’s where the story lives.

SynkedUP

SynkedUP: Empowering Landscape and Outdoor Living Companies to Thrive in Today’s Business Climate

As the world continues to adjust to the post-COVID landscape, businesses across all industries face an undeniable reality: the strategies that worked during the pandemic may not suffice in today’s market. While people once had large budgets to spend, many companies are now hunkering down, finding unique ways to generate leads, and striving to make smarter decisions with their resources. This shift has made it clear that efficiency, adaptability, and a data-driven approach are key to success—particularly for blue-collar contractors and landscape businesses.

SynkedUP Software Company Logo

At the recent SynkedUP Business Summit, hosted at the Marriott hotel in Dayton, Ohio, leaders and experts gathered to share insights on these challenges, providing valuable tools and strategies to help contractors and landscape professionals not only survive but thrive. The event was beautifully captured by Sheldon James Photography, and it brought to light how companies can leverage technology and sharpen their business operations to stay competitive ethically.

Group Photo of 2024 SynkedUP Administration

A New Mindset for Business Success

One of the key takeaways from the SynkedUP Summit was the emphasis on mindset and upholding standards. In today’s fast-paced world, running a successful landscape business requires more than just hard work—it demands intentionality and efficiency. The speakers highlighted a crucial distinction: creating accountability through standards, not discipline. By developing and upholding a clear set of standards, business owners can foster a culture of accountability that doesn’t rely on constant oversight.

Keynote Speaker: Greg Crabtree, Author of Simple Numbers

This shift in mindset can transform how contractors run their businesses. For instance, owners often wear multiple hats: answering the phone, handling invoicing, conducting photoshoots, building estimates, and doing admin work. But is this the best use of their time? SynkedUP helps companies find ways to automate processes, block out time for essential tasks, and optimize labor. It’s about moving from being the only one who does everything to empowering a team and system that can support your growth.

Keynote Speaker: Rob Murray speaking on "Sales and Marketing" - Intrigue Media
YouTube Channel

Know Your Numbers: Job Cost Analysis and Profitability

Another major focus of the summit was on the importance of knowing your numbers. SynkedUP isn’t just a software solution; it can serve as your analyst, breaking down job cost analysis and helping you understand the ins and outs of your financials. As many contractors know, the true profit per hour often gets overlooked in the day-to-day hustle. Without a clear understanding of job costs, it’s easy for profits to slip through the cracks.

Keynote speaker: Jeff Joiner speaks on Professional Development

By leveraging SynkedUP’s tools, companies can gain real-time insights into job costs, labor optimization, and profit margins. This allows contractors to make informed, data-driven decisions. Creating Balance: Time, Family, and Automation

A significant challenge for many entrepreneurs is balancing business demands with personal life. One theme that resonated throughout the summit was finding ways to spend less time working *in* the business and more time *on* the business—and ultimately with family. As contractors, it’s easy to get caught up in the daily grind, but automation and delegation are critical to achieving long-term success and balance.

Weston Zimmerman, CEO and Co-Founder at SynkedUP, Landscaping Business Management Software

SynkedUP can streamline many of the processes that currently require the owner’s direct involvement. Whether it’s automating invoicing, managing estimates, or optimizing workflows, their platform gives owners the tools to focus on what matters most—whether that's driving new leads, building customer relationships, or spending time with loved ones.

      Turning Leads Into Loyal Clients

Post-COVID, generating leads and turning them into long-term clients is no easy feat. At the SynkedUP Summit, the importance of fast turnaround times and showing more gratitude was emphasized. Clients want to feel valued, and in a competitive market, responsiveness and a personal touch can make all the difference.

In today’s landscape, businesses can’t afford to be complacent. Where budgets were once freely available, clients now scrutinize every purchase. That means businesses have to find unique and creative ways to close deals, whether through faster project completion, more transparent communication, or offering a superior client experience.

A Magical Wedding at The Steam Plant: A Celebration of Love, Family, and Innovation

Michael and Jasmine's wedding day at The Steam Plant in Dayton, Ohio, was nothing short of extraordinary. Surrounded by the warmth of family and friends, the couple celebrated their love in a ceremony filled with personal touches, elegance, and a nod to the groom's passion for engineering.

The groomsmen, dressed impeccably, wore boutonnieres that were more than just floral accents. These boutonnieres incorporated small gears, artfully designed to reflect Michael’s love for innovation and engineering. The delicate details added a unique flair to the formal attire, showcasing his personality and interests in a subtle but meaningful way.

Image of groom having boutonniere pinned by wedding coordinator Angela Lemke

The Steam Plant, an industrial-inspired venue, served as the perfect backdrop for this celebration. The exposed brick walls, high ceilings, and rustic charm all gave a nod to the bygone era of industrialism, yet maintained an elegance that highlighted the couple’s modern love story. The venue's character added a distinct atmosphere to the day, reflecting both strength and beauty.

After a heartwarming ceremony, Michael and Jasmine cut a stunning two-tier purple wedding cake, which echoed the elegance of the day. It was a sweet symbol of their union and a lovely centerpiece for the reception. The couple later shared a formal, choreographed first dance that left their guests mesmerized, perfectly capturing their connection and joy.

Rather than a traditional departure in their own car, the newlyweds were whisked away in style. They rode through the city in a beautifully restored vintage Model T wagon, its "Just Married" sign flapping proudly in the breeze. The choice of such a timeless vehicle added a sense of grandeur to their exit, as they waved goodbye to family and friends, enjoying a moment to soak in the excitement of their first evening as husband and wife.

As Michael and Jasmine embark on their new journey together, we offer them many blessings for a future filled with love, happiness, and shared dreams. May their bond grow stronger with each passing day, and may they always remember the love and joy that surrounded them on this unforgettable day.

“All White” At Magnolia Estate

Brian and Charlé's all-white themed wedding was a day to remember, held at the stunning Magnolia Estate in Miamisburg, Ohio. It was a celebration that took place just a day after Ohio had experienced the tail-end effects of Hurricane Helene. While many weddings across the state faced delays and interruptions due to power outages and damage, Magnolia Estate remained untouched, allowing the couple's plans to go on smoothly without a hitch.

The ceremony was the epitome of elegance and simplicity. Charlé's bridal bouquet, made up of long tulips, perfectly reflected this minimal yet sophisticated style. The choice of flowers was intentional, just like many other details that defined this special day. In fact, intentionality was a central theme for Brian and Charlé, not just for their wedding, but in how they approached their relationship and lives. Friends and family, particularly those within the couple's inner circle, frequently mentioned the couple’s focus on moving with purpose and clarity. This mindset infused the day with meaning and purpose, creating an atmosphere that was both intimate and deeply personal.

The entire celebration was filled with laughter, joy, and a sense of calm. There were no rushed moments, no forced formality—just genuine connection and celebration. Guests enjoyed the relaxed, chill vibes, a true reflection of the bride and groom’s personalities. From the ceremony to the reception, everything flowed with a peaceful rhythm that made it clear this couple was focused on savoring every moment.

Thankful for all who helped bring Brian and Charlé's vision to life.

Hello Fall: Your Wedding is a year away!

Welcoming Fall: Tips for 2025 Brides from Your Wedding Photographer

As the crisp autumn air begins to settle in, I'm reminded of why fall is one of my favorite seasons for weddings. The vibrant colors, cozy atmosphere, and soft, golden light make for absolutely stunning photographs. If you're planning a fall wedding in 2025, here are a few tips to help you make the most of this beautiful season.

1. Embrace the Fall Color Palette

Venue: The Barn At Wolf Creek

Fall offers a rich tapestry of colors—think deep reds, burnt oranges, golden yellows, and earthy greens. When choosing your floral arrangements, decor, and even your bridal party attire, consider incorporating these seasonal hues. They not only look incredible in person but also translate beautifully in photos, adding warmth and depth to every shot.

2. Book Your Vendors Early

Fall is an increasingly popular season for weddings, and 2025 will be no exception. With high demand, Especially in the months of September and October, it's crucial to book your key vendors—venue, photographer, florist, and caterer—as early as possible. Many vendors fill their calendars quickly for peak fall dates, so securing your dream team early ensures you won't miss out.

3. Plan for the Weather

Photographer: Sheldon James Photography
Venue: The Barn

Autumn weather can be unpredictable, ranging from warm and sunny to cool and rainy. Have a backup plan for outdoor elements of your day, such as a tent or an indoor alternative, to keep your guests comfortable. Additionally, consider providing cozy touches like blankets or a hot beverage station to enhance the seasonal vibe and keep everyone warm.

4. Golden Hour is Your Best Friend

One of the most magical aspects of fall is the golden hour—the hour before sunset when the light is soft and golden. This time of day is perfect for capturing breathtaking portraits. When planning your timeline, try to schedule some time during golden hour for couple photos. The natural light will add a romantic glow to your images, making them even more special.

5. Consider Seasonal Touches

Incorporate seasonal elements into your wedding to create a truly autumnal experience. Think pumpkin accents, spiced cocktails, or a menu featuring fall flavors like butternut squash or apple pie. These little touches will not only enhance the seasonal feel but also make your wedding unique and memorable.

6. Don't Forget About the Early Sunset

As we move deeper into fall, the days get shorter, and the sun sets earlier. Be mindful of this when planning your schedule, especially if you're hoping to capture outdoor photos. Starting your ceremony earlier in the day allows for plenty of natural light and ensures you get those dreamy outdoor shots before the sun dips below the horizon.

7. Trust Your Vendors

Finally, trust the professionals you've hired to help bring your vision to life. Vendors like your photographer, florist, and planner have extensive experience with fall weddings and can offer valuable advice on how to navigate the unique aspects of the season. Lean on their expertise to ensure your day is as flawless and stress-free as possible.

Fall weddings are truly magical, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty and cozy charm. With these tips in mind, you'll be well on your way to creating an unforgettable autumn celebration. I can't wait to capture the beauty of your big day in 2025!

A Special Wedding Ceremony With The Estate at Sunset Farm

In August, I had the pleasure of capturing a beautiful wedding at The Estate at Sunset Farm in Ohio—a venue that’s as enchanting as its name suggests. Nestled in the heart of Ohio’s countryside, this historic estate offers the perfect blend of timeless elegance and rustic charm, making it an unforgettable setting for any wedding.

Bridal Party Standing on Venue Front Steps

The venue, originally built in the early 1900s, has been lovingly restored to preserve its rich history while providing modern amenities. The sprawling grounds, with their mature trees and lush gardens, create a serene and romantic atmosphere that makes every moment feel like a scene from a classic love story.

For this wedding, the couple’s attention to detail was impeccable. From the intricately designed invitations to the personalized place settings, every element reflected their unique style and love story. One of my favorite shots from the day was of the bride’s bouquet— a stunning arrangement of blush roses and wildflowers that perfectly complemented the natural beauty of the venue. Another standout was the beautifully adorned dessert table, where the cake was surrounded by a variety of sweet treats, each more delightful than the last.

Playa Blanca roses mixed with Perennial Blue and lilac colors

As the sun began to set, the estate lived up to its name, casting a warm, golden glow over the celebration. The couple shared their first dance under a canopy of twinkling lights, with the setting sun as their backdrop—a moment that felt almost surreal in its perfection.

Shooting at The Estate at Sunset Farm was a dream come true, and I’m so grateful to have been a part of this couple’s special day. Their wedding was a beautiful reflection of their love, and I’m honored to have captured these memories for them to cherish forever.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 29, 2022 • CHICAGO HEIGHTS, IL

It’s always a special time when two love birds enter into a college world with the plans to earn a four year degree and come out with a wedding ring and the perfect start to life with their forever person.

a fun filled moment of the bride and groom before their first dance

Logan and Lawrence first met in the fall of 2012 on the campus of Tiffin University. It started with the mere exchange of pleasantries and blossomed into an unbreakable bond. Like many before them, Logan and Lawrence’s relationship started as friends who enjoyed each other’s company. They enjoyed lunch in the café between classes and game nights with friends that turned into late night conversations about dreams and aspirations. In May of 2015, Logan and Lawrence decided to take the next step in their relationship and make it official. In January of 2018 they relocated to Joliet, Illinois where they reside today with their four fur children.

A wedding on a rainy day

Rain on your wedding day is good luck because it signifies that your marriage will last.

As you know, a knot that becomes wet is extremely hard to untie – therefore, when you “tie the knot” on a rainy day, your marriage is supposedly just as hard to unravel! We can thank Hindu traditions for this belief.

Jim and Jordan Coyne are the newlyweds behind Cliffside Acres.

People often ask them how and why we built a wedding venue, and to tell you the truth, it was never about weddings.

For them , it has always been about loving and serving ALL people and planting deep roots in our community.

They took an already beautiful property that we inherited from Jordan’s grandmother and a team of talented people (family, friends, neighbors & strangers) and built Cliffside Acres into what it is today: a place where our couples and their loved-ones celebrate their very best days.

I was booked to shoot Emily and Austin’s wedding in June of 2020. After speaking with the Coyne’s I discovered that I was one of the very first to have had the opportunity to shoot a wedding there. This venue is a DREAM!

Tips when you are picking your wedding florist in Dayton Ohio

Macro/ up close shot of bouquet Dayton Ohio Wedding

Wedding flowers are really the heart of your celebration and can create the vibe you're going for: romantic, modern, whimsical, rustic—the list goes on and on. Hiring a florist is an important part of the wedding planning process, but there are a few things you'll need to do before signing a contract with your flower pro. Here's a step-by-step guide to finding the perfect florist for your wedding day.

When Should You Hire a Florist for Your Wedding?

We recommend starting to research wedding florists about 11 months before your big day, with the goal to sign a contract between 9 and 10 months pre-wedding. Basically, as soon as you've booked your venue and have officially set a date, you can start researching other vendors, including your florist. Given the current wedding boom, vendors are booking up faster than ever (especially if you're marrying during peak wedding season) which in Dayton Ohio peak season is considered June to November, so the earlier you can secure a florist, the better!

Couples Portrait (Stone Valley Meadows) 4914 Robinson Vail Rd Franklin Ohio 45005

1. Establish Your Flower Style

Some florists specialize in tall, lush, ornate centerpieces, while others are better at modern, minimalist arrangements. Find photos of bouquets, boutonnieres and centerpieces you like to figure out your style, and choose a wedding color palette. And familiarize yourself with some of the most common floral terms and types of flowers and greenery, so you'll be able to talk shop with your florist.

2. Determine Your Floral Needs

Do you want someone who'll not only make your arrangements but also help design the look of your reception tables and ceremony aisle? A floral designer is probably more your speed. Already have a wedding planner or an eye for design? Then a regular florist will likely do the trick. Figure out which is the best fit—this will allow you to narrow your search and help determine your budget.

3. Create Your Floral Budget

Décor and flowers should amount to about 10 percent of your overall wedding budget. According to The Knot Real Wedding Study, the average couple spent $2,300 on floral decor—but that number varies widely depending on your wedding location, guest count and other details. If you love flowers and want a grand floral arrangements, or are dead-set on peonies in November, plan to bump up this number. And account for extras like setup and breakdown charges, taxes and tips. It's essential you have a number in mind when you start meeting with wedding florists.

4. Get Recommendations

As with all wedding pros, you want a florist who's reliable, capable and within your price range. You also should find someone who is open to your ideas and whose taste you respect. One of the best ways to find your florist is by word of mouth—ask for recommendations from newlyweds you know and read online reviews on The Knot Marketplace. You can also check out real wedding photos from events that took place in your wedding location, find images of floral arrangements you like and see who created them. If you're working with a wedding planner or a venue coordinator, they should have some suggestions of local florists.

5. Schedule an Interview

You should hire someone you trust to make the right floral decisions—someone who instinctively knows what will look good together. Set up appointments with your "short list" of florists so you can connect in person and view a portfolio of their work. It's a good idea to come with a list of questions, and have the following information ready:

  • Your wedding date

  • An estimated guest count, including number of wedding party members

  • Your wedding venue

  • Color scheme and flower ideas

  • A list of your other booked wedding vendors

Landoll’s Mohecian Castle (561 Township Road 3352 Loudonville OH 44842 (Couples Portrait)

6: Show Don’t tell

Are you a true minimalist? Or are you looking to do an über-romantic, glamorous wedding? Your florist isn't a mind reader and images are more telling than words. Bring your Pinterest board, a bridesmaid dress fabric swatch and a photograph of your wedding dress or attire to your interviews. Share your vision and discuss your budget.

7: Consider the proposal:
Determine your top picks and have a second interview or follow-up discussion to hash out details like exact flowers, cost of materials and rentals, and setup and breakdown costs. Have each florist put together a detailed proposal for your wedding floral design based on what you've told them about your vision and budget. If you've spoken about many different ideas, ask them to prepare a "high" best-case scenario and "low" bare-minimum proposal. You can always mix and create a mid-range package—perhaps you spend more on the centerpieces and pare down the bridesmaid bouquets.

8: Pick a winner :
Review your proposals and determine the best match. If you have concerns about any costs or elements of the proposal, talk about them with your chosen florist now. When you're completely satisfied with the proposal, your wedding florist will turn it into a formal contract.

Tips for booking your Ohio wedding photographer

Hey Ohio brides! I’m the photographer at Sheldon James Photography and I want to spread some awareness about how you should be vetting photographers to hire for your wedding day. This list can mean the difference between professional, reliable coverage for your wedding vs being ghosted/ losing your most important images. Since Covid, the photography community has seen its share of scammers and I want to help you avoid that at all cost! We are also the ones spending the most time with you on this day (sometimes more than your bridal party. Be sure to meet up with them in person during a consult to see if you click!

Ask your prospective photographer these questions

• Is your business registered with the state? (Look their business name up on the Ohio sec. State business search. Red flag if it doesn’t show up.) Moreover any certificates, awards, and BBB accreditation, this is how all business register with the state of Ohio for tax and good lawful standing.

•do you offer a complimentary 30 minute engagement session with your wedding packages? ( this really helps you get acquainted with your photographer! I’m so glad I chose to offer this to my clients. It really helps break the ice)

•Do you have a contract?

•Does your contract cover my wedding with another photographer if you end up not being able to attend and are you the main photographer that represents your business? There are some companies that have many photographers under one umbrella so what in turn happens is, you book a photography company and the person you initially spoke with is not the photographer who shows up to shoot your wedding on your wedding day

•if I want to add on time to my package, how much does an extra hour cost?

•what are your travel fees? All weddings booked with us do not require travel fees unless there is 1+ hour of travel time.

•do I receive all finalized (based on their discretion) digital images with each package?

•what is your payment method? (Invoicing service should be an option)

•what is your contractual turn around time vs your actual turn around time

•how many weddings have you done before

•are you experienced in flash photography

•does your contract require a seat at a table and a plate of food?( ALWAYS feed your vendors especially your photogs. We run around more than anyone else! )

•be sure they offer in person consults for weddings

•a second photographer isn’t as important a many think it is, it just makes the photographers job a bit easier. If they offer a second shooter, that means they will be trusting them with specific moments to capture while they’re capturing something else, so, be sure to ask how experienced that photographer is. If they’re trusted with a special moment and they don’t understand how their camera/flash works you might have just lost that moment forever. If they DONT offer a second shooter that is their professional decision and only effects the photographer.

•always ask to see full galleries of past weddings so you can see their work in all light conditions

•how the images are delivered (digital files on an online gallery is the norm, most offer prints and album’s for extra costs!)

•ask how many pictures per hour they average. (50-100 per hour is generally what you’ll find!)
