The Power of Connection: Why Your Wedding Photographer Should Feel Like an Old Friend

There’s something incredible about the way relationships form in the wedding world. As a photographer, I’ve had the privilege of capturing love in all its forms for nearly 12 years now—but every now and then, I have a conversation that reminds me exactly why I love what I do.

Today, I received a call from a potential client I had never met before. It wasn’t a referral or a social media lead—it was a good, old-fashioned cold call. She was reaching out on behalf of her elders, who are planning a truly gorgeous wedding celebration. As we started talking, I quickly learned that this was a team effort. She, her daughter, and her husband were all helping to pull together the perfect wedding day—and after doing their research, reading reviews, and exploring their options, they decided that I was one of the the one’s they wanted to capture it.

That still blows me away.

The consultation wasn’t rigid or formal. It didn’t feel like an interview. Instead, it felt like chatting with an old friend. We talked through the timeline, the venue layout, the little moments that matter most. We swapped ideas effortlessly, as if we’d been working together for years. That ease and energy? That’s what I aim to bring to every wedding I shoot.

Being in this industry for over a decade now, I often find it surreal to reflect on how far I’ve come. What started as a passion has become a profession—and now, mentees and colleagues see me as the “veteran” in the room. It’s an honor I don’t take lightly. I’ve seen it all: big ballroom celebrations, intimate backyard ceremonies, and every kind of love story in between. With that experience comes a level of calm and clarity that I believe every couple deserves on their wedding day.

Here’s the truth: Booking your wedding photographer should not feel like a sales pitch. It should feel like a conversation. A collaboration. Your photographer should make you feel understood, confident, and most importantly—excited. They should be someone who listens with intention, offers insight with grace, and can visualize your day as vividly as you can.

A professional isn’t just someone who knows how to pose you in the right light ( even though we also understand lighting (Learn more here) —it’s someone who puts you at ease, blends into your family dynamic, and brings elegance, adaptability, and artistry to every frame they capture.

So if you’re in the process of choosing your wedding photographer, take your time. Trust your gut. Make sure it’s someone who makes you feel comfortable, heard, and supported. Especially for small or intimate weddings, the person behind the lens becomes part of the atmosphere. Choose someone who can move through your celebration with care, grace, and just the right amount of joyful presence.
